Surviving parents, students, and staff members of the Robb Elementary mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas have filed a $27 billion class action lawsuit against the city, school district, and law enforcement agencies.
Oof.

Surely you must know by now that plaintiff's lawyers just make up insane numbers to get more press. They almost always have a much lower ballpark of what's reasonable to expect.
The more interesting story is that the Texas Department of Public Safety has been making state legislators agree to NDAs to brief them on certain aspects about the Uvalde response and investigation. Seems like a pretty corrupt practice to tamp down information sharing on what should be FOIA-able.

That’s fucked up but it really belongs in the “Governors are the worst” or “city councils are the worst” or “state legislators are the worst” thread.
All laws and regulations are in the end enforced by dudes with guns.
That they went with arrest vs. a lien is a bit odd, but hey. I'm sure they are just as diligent as serving misdemeanor and felony warrants when the local government's contractor's cash flow is not involved.
"Yeah, we'll arrest that woman. Let me just put it on our prioritized to do list, and we'll get her as soon as she gets to the top."
Also, there is no world where handcuffs were required.
Look, when you bribe the city council to win the contract for municipal waste services, it's understood that the police will assist you with collecting the debts owed to you.
The handcuffs thing might be down to a stupid policy the cops have no discretion over. This sort of rule making tends to be necessary when you intentionally hire stupid people. Also, you know, pour encourager les autres.

I don't know if we disagree on much of this issue.

Don't think we do at all. Just depressing how seemingly unchangeable all the layers of bad incentives are.
