If nothing is done, it will be a travesty.

The highest job in the country, with probably being the most scrutinized. He failed in his duty and should be punished.

Sounds like a key part of a large seditious conspiracy to me.

The DC city government and Congress had requested that the Guard not be deployed ahead of time. They specifically did not want security entities theoretically under Trump's command.

He could have ordered them deployed if the Pentagon would have listened to him, but they would have taken time to muster and probably would not have been able to respond in time. See this article around inauguration and delays in getting the Guard deployed after the Capitol riot:

I just don't think Trump is strategic or smart enough to plan that far ahead.

If we were living in "normal" times, he'd be punished by lack of public support, but we all know that these are not normal times.

the reason he couldn't deploy and/or command the National Guard is because they are a state run militia, not a federal entity.

that's up to the governor to decide.

edit: nevermind.

He had no problem using federal law enforcement agents to clear Lafayette Square.

Except for the case of DC. They are directly under the command of the Pentagon/ POTUS.

Yeah, which kind of annoyed anyone not on his team. Congress and the city did not want a repeat and then didn't have additional resources available on the 6th.

You're right, those two demonstrations were the same thing and the mistakes of one should inform the other above all else.

Most of the security services are subordinate to the executive. They would have had to already been deployed (Lafayette square business had occured after days of violent protests) Initially the violent protests at the White House was managed almost entirely by the Secret Service - they suffered almost all the injuries, additional federal resources responded later.

For the 6th, the City/ Congress/ Pentagon/ DOJ agreed ahead of time to not have oodles of personnel on hand just in case. They couldn't deploy at the drop of a hat, and regular Army troops would have been inappropriate. If you think Trump was plotting a coup, the Army is the tool appropriate for the job that the Pentagon did not want to give him (or DC Guard for that matter)

Oh ok this whole insurrection was just one big misunderstanding then. Gotcha.

I don't think the Pentagon was taking his calls at that point.

The point the Committee made last night was that Trump never tried to summon law enforcement support of any kind and watched the whole thing unfold w/ very little effort to stop it.

Seems like a city/ DOJ issue. Since when was POTUS responsible for crowd control?

Interesting points that I took away from last night (for those who chose to selectively ignore):

While the riot was unfolding, Trump was sitting alone and watching it on TV, calling senators (who were running for their lives) and harrassing/indirectly threatening them to change their votes, while his terrified and exasperated staff pleaded with him to do what was required of his job, and warning him that he was derelict in his duty.

Then when he found out that the rioters were chanting "Hang Mike Pence", he excitedly tweeted an attack on Mike Pence less than 2 minutes later, which ignited the moment where the rioters broke into the capitol. A staff member overheard him say that Pence "deserves what he is gonna get". Then secret service agents protecting Pence began sending out messages to their families because they believed they were going to die. At this point, several members of Trump's staff resigned in disgust, because it was clear to them that he supported the riot and had no interest in stopping it.

The white house call log is also COMPLETELY BLANK during the entire thing, despite proof that he was making tons of phone calls (mostly to harasss senators). It's also the only time ever that he told the white house photographer to stay away from him and not document anything.

The whole thing is unprecedented and entirely insane. Imagine what would be going on now if the vice president or any senators had actually been killed, which seems to be what Trump was hoping for.

But there's nothing to see here, move along. Trumpy misunderstood. Nothing could have been done about the peaceful protest. LOLOL. Derp.
