Oh I don't agree with a word they say,but if I was presented with the option of throwing Ted Cruz or Liz Cheney into a volcano I'd choose Ted Cruz 100%

I'd go with Liz Cheney. 80%

I don’t agree with this.

However, what strikes me about the Cheney thing is that in 2020 Republicans offered her a Senate candidacy on a silver platter. As late as November, House Republicans were going on the record saying they saw her as a future speaker of the house. She consistently voted with Trump’s agenda and the party’s expectations.

The full and entire reason that the apparatus turned on her was that she wouldn’t humor the stolen election lie. I say again: in the weeks after the election, the very same people who are about to vote no confidence were going on record to talk about her future, expanded place in party leadership. Nothing about her has changed in those six months except that she will not pretend the election was stolen and will not stop condemning the capitol riot.

That’s the line in the sand they cannot tolerate someone crossing.

To be honest, I was just making a stupid quip. I don't really follow politics closely enough to have a real opinion about Liz Cheney beyond hating her because of her Dad.

The conservative organization Club for Growth on Wednesday came out against Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) as a replacement for Rep. Liz Cheney as House Republican Conference chairwoman.

"Elise Stefanik is NOT a good spokesperson for the House Republican Conference," the group tweeted. "She is a liberal with a 35% CFGF lifetime rating, 4th worst in the House GOP. House Republicans should find a conservative to lead messaging and win back the House Majority."

Interesting. Why?

Pragmatism!

I don't think there is anything sane or reasonable about wanting the GOP to fall back into the hands of the neocon war criminals. I'd rather the Republican party remain in the hands of a mostly ineffectual con artist like Trump for a 1000 years than to turn the party over to Cheney and company. Liz Cheney's only interest here is to return the GOP safely to the Overton Window as dictated by the establishment.

I also think the MAGA crowd is the only disruptive movement we have left (sad as that is) to the dominant neoliberal hegemony that is consuming the world, and the proof of that disruption is in the hysterical reaction that the establishment had to Trump in the four years he was in power. Where else is disruption going to come from? The left? All they can manage is breaking Starbucks windows and beating up people who don't say black lives matter enough.

That’s all fine for explaining why you prefer this outcome, Burt, but it doesn’t change the fact that they aren’t rejecting Cheney for her politics or her neoconservatism. In fact, with those traits demonstrably in place they were ready to elevate her to a position of greater power. The neoconservatism was fine. The establishment mindset was fine. ALL of it was fine.

The switch was flipped from “party champion” to outcast solely by her refusal to pretend an election was stolen. That, and only that, wasn’t fine.

That could just be the last straw or they were slow to accept that she is rejected by conservative voters. She's stepped up her criticism of trump since the election, and her popularity tanked after she blamed trump for the "insurrection" (which I think is a slightly separate issue from stolen election claims). She's made it very clear that she isn't on that side, which is the vast majority of the GOP.

Are republicans supporting a lie? Sure, but...That's politics?

It's interesting that they are supporting something they believe to be a lie because their voters are forcing them to instead of the usual reason, which is that politicians want to convince voters of something. Kind of a tail wagging the dog wagging the tail scenario or something.

normal sad state of affairs:

Politician: We need you to believe this lie we created so we can gain more power for ourselves.

the bizarro world sad state of affairs we now find ourselves in:

Voters: Fuck you, believe this lie we created or we won't vote for you!

------

I don't know, but this seems like an improvement? I guess? Maybe? At least if you believe in democracy.

Wait, we're all suppose to accept Burt's lie that the voters started the Big Lie? The politician (Trump) started the lie, Burt. It's "the normal sad state of affairs." Nothing new here. Except that the lie the new GOP (which seems like a contradiction, how can it still be the Grand Old Party?) wants everyone to buy is that they should be kept in power because they say so, not because of the actual votes.

Unsurprisingly at this point, Cheney is removed from leadership for refusing to say an election was stolen.

“If you had a member of the Democratic leadership and said they didn't believe in climate change anymore, do you think they would still remain in Democrat leadership?” Florida Representative Byron Donalds asked reporters. “I don't think so.”

Smart of them to pin all their party’s hopes on a cognitively declining 75-year old.
