What do you think would have happened if he did it?

Jake Tapper would devote 5 tweets and a quarter of his show to what a great moment it was for revealing the humanity behind all the political madness

He'd look like a decent man.

It should. Given the political efforts undertaken by the families and survivors, this crass rejection of basic kindness was a naked statement of fealty to the president. His refusal to shake hands was for an audience of one.

Exactly

Shakes Hand: gives activist opportunity to attack, embarrass, berate, and attempt to extract political points from him in a meeting beset by protests and screaming.

No Shake: Confirms heartlessness of red team and shows his lack of empathy

Is there a chance he had no idea who this guy was, or is this something that he would have definitely known?

Why... would shaking his hand be bad at all? I don't get it. Whether he knew who it was or not?

He introduced himself and explained that his daughter was killed in the shooting. It was at that point that Kavanugh turned and walked away.

Y'all will bend over backwards to avoid calling these cowards and crooks what they really are. Unbelievable.

Because he has no idea what the person is about to say or do and it was already a threatening situation with multiple activists having been forcibly removed by cops. The ground rules are simple: don’t engage or you risk escalation.

No, no Chud, these are grown men beholden to very important and sacred special interests. Showing basic common decency and human behavior is far beneath them.

And y'all will bend over backwards to avoid keeping your eye on the ball and according these distractions exactly as much attention as they're worth: zero.

It really would be something if this hearing could be used as an opportunity to discuss constitutional philosophy or judicial interpretation or the consequences of federalism's erosion on the tension between democracy and the judiciary or any number of ideas worth spending time and energy on.

But no. Cheap political theater is enough.

I am one of the few Americans acually watching the hearing. I have the mental capacity to "keep my eye on the ball" and recognize that these men are also the modern scum of the Earth.

That you think "keeping your eye on the ball" means passing judgement on the character of the individuals involved - subject to an extraordinary amount of incomplete information, and with the particulars of what is known selectively passed through the highly politicized lenses of each side's ideological water carriers - rather than considering the ideas that motivate literally any of the substantive objections to Kavanaugh's nomination means that no, you have not kept your eye on the ball at all.

At least we have decades of of increasingly vicious media attacks on the supreme court to look forward to.
