@Norris and @Spike - do I look like a conservative? Lets see how you compare. I will admit that a lot of the heavy lifting has already been done in Canada, so it's much easier for me to support existing rules than push for change.

I don’t think anyone was labeling you as conservative, but rather commenting on a 180 in conservative thinking on the issue, simply because it has to do with vaccine mandates.

Pretty much this. Surf was the one who brought it up in this thread, but my post really wasn't about his politics.

But do companies have a right to fire people if they refuse to get vaccinated?

Exactly. It's question of if the vaccine mandate is valid cause.

And should people fired for this cause get unemployment benefits?

Obviously I'm not asking if they have legal authority to. I'm asking if they should be able to.

Sure, you can fire someone for any reasonable reason.

Unvaccinated employees could cause staffing or productivity issues due to outbreaks or quarantine. Companies are also subject to fines for unvaccinated or untested employees under the federal mandate. Rapid testing is a cost to the employer. Et cetera.

Companies have a right to protect themselves against such matters.

Yeah, I think the courts have upheld this view as well

Yeah, I think the courts have upheld this view as well

One of my neighbours is anti Covid vax. He is 100% work from home. He is looking at getting fired at the end of the month and no employment insurance. He has been paying into mandatory federal employment insurance for 20+ years. This seems like absolute overreach by the federal gov't to deny employment insurance in this case and using employment insurance as a cudgel for public health.

Except for the part about there being a universal Federal mandate.

He might be referring to my reaction, which was more surprise than anything. The only policy position I could recall surf expressing previously was that he favored UBI because he saw it as a means to gutting poverty reduction programs and school lunch. With that and his social issue posts as context, it was the assertion of 90%....not, like, "most" or "a lot,"....that caught me by surprise.

I'm assuming that wherever he listed Canada's current policy on an issue instead of stating his own preference, it's because he supports the status quo in Canada on that issue. In which case, yeah, I understand the 90% now.
