Tl;dr?

It wasn't necessarily Peter Daszack doing gain of function research that made the strain that escaped the Wuhan lab, but possibly parallel Chinese military efforts at the same lab. The strain most similar to Covid-19 (minus the Furin cleavage site/ spike protein) was discovered after killing some miners and China did not share any info about that strain internationally. The Chinese military was IDing potent Coronavirus strains and adding spike proteins to them to make them more infectious in humans.
