My 19-yr old rock star son has been in the hospital for a week.
He got covid late April from which he developed blood clots-- Leg and lung. He got better then he got sick again within days, spiking fevers everyday. Turns out the small amount of fluid around his one lung got fucked by the covid pneumonia he developed and it turned into a cesspool.
He had to have a chest tube inserted into his back, through the ribs to suction out the shit and piss that accumulated. This was Friday. It's still in him (Tuesday night) .
Because it wasn't draining as it should over the first 3 days, he had to have tPA (the stuff that saves stroke victims if administered early enough) right through the chest tube into his pleural arena . Luckily it worked and he drained 2 liters of shit, piss, blood, and pus last night.
His lung is partially collapsed from being squished up against said 2 liters of shit and piss.
He's 19 and was in perfect health before covid, never set foot in a hospital before.
I left out 59% of the horror for readability purposes.
I'll keep you updated when he is doing better & stuff but in the meantime.....don't get covid
He is a rock star and damn strong to be going through that hell of an ordeal. I wish him well and hope getting all of that junk out of him starts him on the road to recovery.
Thank you everyone. He was finally discharged today. Such a relief. I'm sure he will fully recover , but you can tell it took a toll on him.

KT, if they’re ever able to determine why this hit your otherwise healthy teenager so hard, and you don’t mind sharing, I’m sure we would all love to know. Lots of young people have contracted Covid, very few have gotten sick.

Just bad luck? Or another explanation?
Very few is relative. There have been many stories in Canada of healthy teens and twenty-somes ending up on breathing machines, in comas and worse. This virus does not descriminate.

Thank you for the everyone.
Hi Bammer , I'm glad you asked. Whenever I research anything medical on the internet , I preface it with "pub med" so that you can get down to the nitty gritty.
As far as I know, people of all age groups have been forming clots. As that article says, most times the clots are unfortunately first discovered in autopsies.
A blood clot in the lung is called pulmonary embolism (PE). PE's are one of several known causes of "pleural effusion" which is basically a collection of fluid in the pleural area --the space between your lung and chest. So my kid got that. Then he got pneumonia in his lungs because of covid which inflamed the fluid and caused it to grow to more that 2 frickin liters .
I don't know why he got the clots . The doctors surmise It may have been because he was isolated in his room laying on his bed for 9 days straight, or just because of the covid, or a combination thereof ,
One of the "horrors" part of his story that I left out is that the doctors were running blood tests on him to see if he had "MIS-C" which is a syndrome that has been emerging in kids 21 and under approximately 6 weeks after a covid diagnosis, which fit his profile exactly. It causes inflammation /damage in multiple systems /organs. I was shitting bricks because his blood tests were all either High or Low . The doctors reassured me that he did not have it however. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-con ... c-20502561
Other than that all I can offer is that he would dabble in vaping with his friends , never at home .
I'm just scared that the effusion will return for some reason.

Nothing worse than watching your kid suffer, I can't imagine something like what you just went through. Glad to hear he's turned a corner in the right direction.
