https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/16/scie ... -leak.html

Quote:
The genetic data was drawn from swabs taken from in and around the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market starting in January 2020, shortly after the Chinese authorities had shut down the market because of suspicions that it was linked to the outbreak of a new virus. By then, the animals had been cleared out, but researchers swabbed walls, floors, metal cages and carts often used for transporting animal cages.

In samples that came back positive for the coronavirus, the international research team found genetic material belonging to animals, including large amounts that were a match for the raccoon dog, three scientists involved in the analysis said.

The jumbling together of genetic material from the virus and the animal does not prove that a raccoon dog itself was infected. And even if a raccoon dog had been infected, it would not be clear that the animal had spread the virus to people. Another animal could have passed the virus to people, or someone infected with the virus could have spread the virus to a raccoon dog.

But the analysis did establish that raccoon dogs — fluffy animals that are related to foxes and are known to be able to transmit the coronavirus — deposited genetic signatures in the same place where genetic material from the virus was left, the three scientists said.

The number of jumps it takes to get to "this is evidence it came from the market" has got to be a record.

No, it's tied by the number of jumps it takes to get to "this virus came from the Wuhan lab."

If you choose to believe "recently discovered" data from the Chinese CDC, you do you.

An alternative, should you be open to one, would be to listen to what the person who was funding and working directly on the research in the Wuhan lab explains right here:

Believe the Chinese government or the person who was literally doing the work. Your call.

From an Occam's Razor perspective though, which is more likely... that a mistake was made at the world epicenter for collecting and studying coronaviruses in bats and one of the hundreds of pathogens under study accidentally leaked out... or... that bat soup a pangolin a raccoon dog at a wet market that even the Chinese government has acknowledge is not the first infection point (just the first identified super-spreader event) is the likely source. IMNSHO, the "there's been an outbreak of chocolaty goodness near Hershey, Pa. What do you think happened?" line still stands.

I am firmly on team zoonotic origin, and it's frustrating that a lot of good writers that I normally enjoy a lot are making a big fuss about the lab leak theory.

What is the evidence of a zoonotic origin? That even though we haven't actually found field evidence of it after 3 years of searching, it's always happened like that before therefore it most likely did this time? And zoonotic and leak are not mutually exclusive, it might have been a naturally occurring virus that was collected and leaked from the lab, because there are extensive published documents describing the Wuhan Lab collecting, testing, and modifying bat based coronaviruses in collaboration with US equities:

A SARS-like cluster of circulating bat coronaviruses shows potential for human emergence(Zhengli-Li Shi and Ralph S Baric, 2015): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4797993/
Quote:
Here we examine the disease potential of a SARS-like virus, SHC014-CoV, which is currently circulating in Chinese horseshoe bat populations1. Using the SARS-CoV reverse genetics system2, we generated and characterized a chimeric virus expressing the spike of bat coronavirus SHC014 in a mouse-adapted SARS-CoV backbone. The results indicate that group 2b viruses encoding the SHC014 spike in a wild-type backbone can efficiently use multiple orthologs of the SARS receptor human angiotensin converting enzyme II (ACE2), replicate efficiently in primary human airway cells and achieve in vitro titers equivalent to epidemic strains of SARS-CoV. Additionally, in vivo experiments demonstrate replication of the chimeric virus in mouse lung with notable pathogenesis.

SARS-like WIV1-CoV poised for human emergence (Ralph S Baric 2016): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4801244/
Quote:
The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-CoV highlights the continued risk of cross-species transmission leading to epidemic disease. This manuscript describes efforts to extend surveillance beyond sequence analysis, constructing chimeric and full-length zoonotic coronaviruses to evaluate emergence potential. Focusing on SARS-like virus sequences isolated from Chinese horseshoe bats, the results indicate a significant threat posed by WIV1-CoV. Both full-length and chimeric WIV1-CoV readily replicated efficiently in human airway cultures and in vivo, suggesting capability of direct transmission to humans. In addition, while monoclonal antibody treatments prove effective, the SARS-based vaccine approach failed to confer protection.

Quote:
We thank Dr. Zhengli-Li Shi of the Wuhan Institute of Virology for access to bat CoV sequences and plasmid of WIV1-CoV spike protein.

When it comes to the dangerous research that would have put this virus at the Wuhan Lab in 2019, we have emails from EcoHealth saying they are doing it. We have documents that the NIH funded them doing it. The scientists involved from both the US and China published peer-reviewed studies saying they did it. We have them on video explaining that they did it. While we will never know the final truth of COVID-19, I don't know what more evidence would be required to make the lab leak theory the most plausible.

That's fucked up... that social media companies would outsource their fact checking.

At least the stories were still free to be published in papers and reported on at all.

Force school closures? Force lockdowns? That literally never happened!

My kids' school stayed closed despite vigorous efforts by the health department to give them a safe plan. The Feds didn't close our school it was closed by:

- Refusal of the district to pay for required safety equipment and ventilation upgrades.
- Inability to convince teachers to spend their days in a school that has no required safety equipment or ventilation upgrades.
- Inability to convince parents to let their kids spend their days in a school that has no required safety equipment or ventilation upgrades.

Remember when that recommendation loosened as we learned more and the death rate dropped under 10,000 Americans per day?

Was it just publicly signalling how serious the virus was? Didn't think wearing talismans to ward off the evil eye was a part of modern public health.

B don't kid yourself. That 'person' doesn't give two shits about kids, she just wanted Trump to lose the election.
