I’m not following you here. Do you mean fingerprint/checksum a file? The issue isn’t just manipulation of a news video so much as the generation of lifelike fake videos. Paste a suspect into a security video to get a robbery conviction or a president into a water sports porn vid

Generally, I think that it’ll take 20 or so years for mainstream/casual media subscribers to figure out how to separate the wheat from the chaff; the more media literate will have a better grip on reality, but will be in the minority.
I like R2D’s idea of encryption, but don’t know enough about the technology to gauge how realistic that is.
One thing I will predict is a genesis of non-partisan news outlets, that will ultimately band together to share resources. Call it AP 2.0. They’ll be digitally savvy, donor-supported, and will probably be anchored by NPR, PRX, WaPo, etc. Figure ten more years for them to get their shot together, then another ten for them to really capture the average listener market.
