In Beijing on Monday, China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, told reporters that claims of genocide in Xinjiang “could not be more preposterous”. “It is a rumour fabricated with ulterior motives and a total lie,” Wang said.
But they are totally, pinky-swear-cross-my-heart-hope-to-die, being truthful about the WIV lab and the origin of COVID-19.

What makes you think they don't know how their rhetoric sounds to us? Why assume the problem is on their side?
Stepping back to shitposting, they are using accounts on social media to try to manage the discussion that can't be accessed by the majority of their countrymen. Clearly what they do on Twitter/ Facebook/ Etc is not intended for their internal audience. Their inability to be effective shitposters means either they don't care and are doing it out of habit or they don't understand what makes us tick. The Russians aren't exactly breaking the bank on their efforts, but at least it normally comes across as a plausible worldview from our perspective.
Maybe these big, public pronouncements at the talks are intended for an internal audience, or at least to those globally in their orbit.
