Very astute once again with the timing. Some sort of brexit will have been enacted by then and the downturn is already being felt so by then it will have bitten down hard.

Perfect timing to call it and see a referendum pass easily.

Just a bit bizarre.
Local and European elections all over Europe this weekend.

Support at exit polls for a United Ireland at an all time record high.

Winds of change. Saw this coming as soon as brexit went south. Now it’s approaching at speed if Boris Johnson takes the job in Britain.

Good article.

Well it’s July 12th and we know that means up north.
I look at this and wonder. Do we really want a unified country with these people in it?
Just watch

If I or anyone burned a Union Jack in town I’d be arrested for it.
These clowns loathe us. They know where this is headed.
It won’t be pretty but it’s coming I guess

Anyone should be able to burn any flag they want, imo.

Yes, even though it would pain me.

Well that was unexpected and will probably amount to nothing but she wasn’t long doing it. He’s only PM a couple of hours

Quote:
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has said she has written to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson pressing him over Brexit, restoring devolved government in Northern Ireland and calling for the establishment of a "clear criteria" for the calling of an Irish unity referendum.

Ms McDonald said she wants to meet Mr Johnson in the coming days to discuss the issues.

"I have reminded the new Prime Minister of the requirement of the British Government to honour and implement their commitments under the Good Friday and subsequent Agreements. Agreements that are incompatible with Brexit," she said.

"The people of the north voted to remain within the EU and that vote must be respected.

"There is a pressing need to restore the powersharing institutions in the north, which has been held up by the DUP's continued denial of rights and the continued operation of that party's Confidence and Supply Agreement with the tories

So has Brexit changed the attitudes towards unification?

Because the feeling I got from talking to people in the republic is that they couldn't give two shits about unification.

It was always a non issue perpetually twenty years away.
It’s front and Center now.
You bring up the point though. There’s very few against it here.
The scale is meh to want it to happen.

Same scale we had for marriage equality possibly.
Irish government does referenda better than any other. We have them Every few years.
And they rarely fail.

This one will be one of those massive social changes like abortion and marriage equality bit even bigger with a bigger feel good factor and a much bigger story internally and internationally.

Long road to go.
Cross border citizens assemblies.
Recognition of themuns (de prods) as a separate distinct nationality
Costings and intergration studies

Changing the flag and the national anthem (these two believe it or not are the main things stick in people throats. More than economy or cost)
Etc etc Etc

EU already said NI gets automatic entry to the EU in a post brexit scenario where the referendums north and south pass. (Both held the same day as with the good Friday referendum)
Scotland has a harder road. If they vote for independence it could take at least five years to gain EU membership. Whole series of stress tests they have to go through.

Border in the sea right now would see the UI idea melt away. It would be a massive economic boom for Northern Ireland. But the DUP are against it. Cos it somehow separates them from Britain.
That said. If they manage to block the border in the sea, Northern Ireland gets decimated economically (which is saying something. It’s already a basket case. Average income in the republic is twice that of NI. ) and that brings about the call for a UI.
British government would dump the £11 billion a year black hole that is NI in a heartbeat.

I forgot the question.
But it’s now front and Center and we’re doing a general election possibly in March. It’s going to be one of the main issues.

Our PM went to Belfast for the Pride parade yesterday. These are baby steps. The DUP and Arlene foster nowhere to be seen. They’re rabidly and openly homophobic. She called him truculent and stubborn just this week.
This is a massive FU to Arlene and co :)

Majority for independence for Scotland.

Leaders debate in Belfast last night. Unification took up most of it.

Good thread on it
