OK, so for the first statement: “Unemployment is low because everyone has two jobs. Unemployment is low because people are working 60, 70, 80 hours a week and can barely feed their family.”

They found: "The July data shows most of these people juggling two jobs — 58 percent — have a primary job and a part-time job. Only 6 percent have two full-time jobs, which calls into question her claim that people are working “60, 70, 80 hours a week.” Indeed, the average hours worked per week for private employees has remained steady at just under 35 hours for years."

-------------------------------------------

So, she said "everyone," but you're clearly not expected to think she's claiming that 100% of people have 2 jobs. Turns out, 58% do.

She didn't say how many people work 60-80 hours, but since 35 is the average, it's not inconceivable that some work a lot.

-------------------------------------------

So, again ... details that don't invalidate her point that low unemployment does not mean that there aren't Americans suffering. She speaks from the hip and uses superlatives. She could vet every answer she gives and fix this problem, but then she'd just be Pelosi, and we'd all think she's just a politician like everyone else.

But the unemployment rate doesn't go even lower when a person gets a second job or works a ton of hours. They are only counted as unemployed if they don't have a job and are actively looking for a job. A much better argument would be to point to the labor force participation rate and focus on the people who aren't counted as unemployed because they've given up looking for a job even though they would work if there was a job available.

Something a person qualified to speak on the topic would know, but I tend to confuse factual correctness with being moral right. (As if we have achieved such flawless morality that one could claim such a thing.)

Btw, the data don't indicate that 58% of people work two jobs, but rather that 58% of people with two jobs have one primary and one part time job.

So, they have one job, plus another job?

She minored in economics

Bachelors degree in the field didn’t appear to help Paul Ryan much either.

Actually I don’t believe there is a single sitting senator with an advanced degree in economics.

yes economists know they can make more money as something other than a politician

politicians have law degrees so they can make extremely lucrative referrals to law firms while an elected official in office and earn the referral fee

hooray democracy
