See, that’s beautiful, though. We think we’re so important and everything’s about us. Nope. Planet doesn’t give a fuck.

Yeah I'm with LV on this. So Yellowstone or aliens would be great

Yellowstone wouldn't cause a global apocalypse though.... Besides Taupō is more likely to blow first

Yellowstone's magma chamber is almost 10 times bigger than Taupō's.

Yeah if Yellowstone blows, the planet is fucked

It needs to happen kinda soon.

We are getting into this place where our technology can now subvert nature.

We'll likely have a comet/asteroid defense system ready in the next 100 years or so.

And scientists are actively trying to figure out a way to vent calderas to relieve pressure and postone eruptions.

Superbug would be cool. The more we fight infectious bacteria, the more it wins.

There's almost a million Hospital Acquired Infections a year now.

Obviously not as cool as Yellowstone going, but I think something like a superbug would really bring out the worst in people, which would be fun to watch.

t2b is legit excited to witness some human suffering

Re: The APOCALYPSE

I wouldn't say excited for the human suffering, more excited for how humanity reacts to an event like this.

Would we get a Roddenberry future or a dystopic future or both?

Re: The APOCALYPSE

We would get 2 weeks of Mad Max and the rest would be silence

Re: The APOCALYPSE

I'd like to think we'd come together, but after a president getting elected after making fun of a mentally disabled person, people yawning at pictures of Assad gassing children and Puerto Rico, I don't think I can mount a defense.

So should we just start killing each other now?

Not sure what this thread is implicating here.

Burt will miss the whole thing, having gotten so excited that he hit his head climbing into his skull-lined roadster, the “bone machine.“

Cleansing thermonuclear fire

http://blog.nuclearsecrecy.com/2018/06/ ... lear-fire/

Tldr: if the Earth’s oceans had twenty times more deuterium than they actually contain, they could be ignited by a 20 million megaton bomb (which is to say, a bomb with the yield equivalent to 200 teratons of TNT, or a bomb 2 million times more powerful than the Tsar Bomba’s full yield). If we assumed that such a weapon had even a fantastically efficient yield-to-weight ratio like 50 kt/kg, that’s still a device that would weigh around a billion metric tons. To put that into perspective, that’s about ten times more mass than all of the concrete of the Three Gorges Dam.

So there you have it — it can be done! You just need to totally change the composition of the oceans and need a nuclear weapon many orders of magnitude more powerful than the gigaton bombs dreamed of by Edward Teller, and then, maybe, you can pull off the cleansing thermonuclear fire experience.

this was already covered in The Terminator series

I just need to find some deuterium. For science...
