Been talking with a couple Alaskan friends about this, and they both got really turned off by the idea of a UBI after seeing how the Alaska Permanent Fund is being weaponized in this manner. Suffice to say, they're not getting Yang's vote in the primary.

The best ubi is called nationalization. Everything else is just a prelude to inflation or a substitute for a more targeted welfare state. If you're not going to nationalize major industries a negative tax is a far better approach to the problems posed by automation.

I don't think the problem of automation is a laughing matter

It most certainly is not. But the idea that furthering government ownership of industry is the solution is farcical.

Oh well in that case I have surely been proven wrong.

Tulsi said on the JRE she is looking into UBI. She's very interested in implementing it, also, but working out the details, she said.

There is no solution there. Like MMT, it's an academic pipe dream.

I'm no economist but from the research I've done, it looks good. It needs to be done right, like any other thing, in order to succeed.

The main inflation we currently experience is in sectors where automation has not been applied due to government regulation or inapplicability – primarily housing, education, and healthcare. The real issue isn’t Universal Basic Income, it’s whether technology and automation will be allowed to reduce prices in different sectors.

The *real issue* is how soon we can turn our teachers into Youtube algorithms. Peak dumb-guy shit.

Machine learning could be used to develop and improve IEPs or customize coursework for students with learning disabilities or other disadvantages. There is nothing dumb-guy about that.

Yeah unfortunately that doesn't touch on what he said at all but good try. You can try to dress up Yang because the issue he identifies is a pressing one (you might even be tempted to say that he articulates a crisis point in capitalism itself), but his way of broaching it and the way he positions automation within a broader cultural and economic landscape is no less boneheaded than Democrats' just-go-back-to-school-dad! plans.

I definitely think it's capable of eliminating your make-work position, if that's what you're driving at.
