Thots?

Interesting theory, but in practice seems like the opposite of everything a criminal justice system is suppose to do.

my first thought is: are there any countries or prior eras in which this has been demonstratably successful?

How would this even work? What if victims (understandably) want no part of it?

I'm all for it.

Our current justice system makes no sense. Hardens the criminals and makes the victims feel powerless.

That is one of my concerns as well, the revictimization potential. But it’s not a universally applied thing. I haven’t heard any say that for Capital murder restorative justice would be better than a trial by the state.

Other concerns include the uneven application of justice (vindictive victims), social stigma factors (accusations of racism for example), etc. it’s tricky, but in many cases it might be beneficial to the psychological well being of all parties involved.

someone intelligent once said, 'you can judge a society by how it treats its prisoners'. To paraphrase.

In the US, they are raped, forced to break the law to survive, forced into gangs of roaming violence.....

were that statement to be applied fully to the US, we would be pretty fucking far down the list of "civilized" countries.

You can tell how bad American prisons are by how absolutely fucking terrified cops are to go to them. They know they're a cesspool and they'll do anything to avoid it.
