Zuck is absolutely Machiavellian. I'd almost respect him if he wasn't so hateable.

Michael LeBeau (Facebook product manager):

"As you know all the growth team is planning on shipping a permissions update on Android at the end of this month. They are going to include the 'read call log' permission... This is a pretty high-risk thing to do from a PR perspective but it appears that the growth team will charge ahead and do it...[The danger is] screenshot of the scary Android permissions screen becomes a meme (as it has in the past), propagates around the web, it gets press attention, and enterprising journalists dig into what exactly the new update is requesting, then write stories about "Facebook uses new Android update to pry into your private life in ever more terrifying ways"

They are afraid of our memes. As they should be.

That Tim Cook speech about banning people was more like a sermon. And they say Apple isn't a cult. All hail our new tech-priests.

Its a glimpse into the future:

Quote:
For more than a hundred centuries The Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

Why does Twitter need to ban hate speech? Every Twitter user already had the ability to ban content they find offensive. It's called the block function.

Patreon banned Carl Benjamin (Sargon) last week. They were basically trolled into allying themselves with actual alt right Nazis, who hate him and tried to get him deplatformed.

I imagine it will end up costing Patreon quite a bit of cash. There was an exodus to places like Subscribestar. Sargon alone was bringing in something like $13000 a month!

They also banned Milo on his first day, but who cares lol.

I’m honestly amazed that they haven’t seen an exodus of users.

Nah. He's rich enough, and his smug chuckles are too much.

that's pretty wild. Was bringing in about half a million a year. I'll throw him a couple of bucks.

Rumor is that JP and company are devising their own alternative. But Paypal/Mastercard has been increasingly aggressive in banning and pressuring these sites as well (including Patreon), so that will still be a roadblock.

If they don't censor their users, they'll have trouble with PayPal and mastercard. Probably stripe, too.

Considering paypal's rumored ties to patreon, it wouldn't surprise me if they just shut down any competitor. They did it to subscribestar as soon as people started leaving.

Google kicked Artstation (a kind of social media site for artists/illustrators) off their app store for committing the heinous crime of having boobs on their website.

We just need to accept the fact that these people know what's best for us.
