I think the effectiveness of these algorithms is vastly overstated. Much of the info they scrape off the internet is useless except for exploiting a few truly predictable sheeple in the world, who I don't pity much. I think even kids are growing immunities faster than the algorithms can adapt.
Or maybe, like usual, I am giving humanity too much credit.

Nah, you’re right. The threat is overblown now that everyone knows it. I would point out that when Obama did targeted political advertising it was considered the height of brilliance... to the point where Amazon made a case study from it:

Here’s a fun little experiment that’s really making me go on Facebook less and less.
Open Facebook and scroll through your feed until you see something that illicits a negative response from you. At that point, close the app/website for the rest of the day.

A friend of mine is a grad student from Germany. On Saturday he went to Jackson, Mississippi to do some research on the civil rights movement. For some he took Greyhound, a 12+ hour bus ride. His social media feeds were quite an entertaining read that day; he definitely saw a different part of the populace than he typically sees in the nicer parts of Atlanta.

I don't care much about demonitization though. Youtubers don't make a lot of money anyway and if youtube wants to only advertise on boring safe content, then they can.

I took my son to see jacksepticeye. One of the questions at the end was if he was going to continue doing so many charity streams. His answer was that it was important to him, because YouTube work had been so good to him financially. His final point was “full disclosure, I made ten million dollars off of YouTube last year...no merch, views only.” He paused. “It’s pretty great.”
He’s got about 9x as many annual views as poor, mistreated anti-censorship champion Steven “socialism is for fags” Crowder. So I don’t know.

Unless he's got some special deal with youtube, I doubt he's making anywhere near that, but I'm sure a top 100 youtuber making safe game videos is living well.
Brooks himself may have been a narratively disappointing supervillain (trolls and operators always are). But there was one striking detail to the article: Poulsen had confirmed Brooks’s identity with the help of an anonymous “Facebook official.” Someone inside Facebook had, it seems, accessed Brooks’s theoretically private user activity and used it to confirm Poulsen’s story.
Quote:
But privileged access is widespread enough that abuse is a familiar phenomenon at Facebook or at any large tech company. Last year, a Facebook employee was fired for stalking women online using information he’d obtained using his access privileges; according to a Vice report, multiple people at the company have been fired for “snooping” on exes or other transgressions. Google, for its part, has fired employees for similar abuses, including one engineer who accessed Gchat conversations between a group of teenagers. Uber famously had an internal “God Mode” used by its employees to see rides taken by celebrities and politicians.

I dont know who those people are.
I recognize a private company's prerogative to determine what content they or do not host. I just worry that since youtube is basically a global monopoly and a big source of where people get "truth" from, this is a very slippery slope. I don't know why flat earthers would be banned/demonetized. I'd bet climate change skeptics are next. Before we know it one company will be controlling how billions or people experience ideas other than their own and not even government should have that power.

The irony of people on twitter complaining about fake content on facebook should not be lost on anyone in this thread.
