I guess I’m saying a primary system seems (at least in contemporary times) to create some strange incentives and dynamics which result in candidates like Trump and Biden.

Oh no I agree, I just couldn't resist given how much the DNC put their thumb on the proverbial scale this year (which was not the case, afaik, with Trump).

Of a nation of 320 million people, I'm being asked to choose between two to run the country. I consider it a minor miracle I've ever remotely liked any of the candidates in my lifetime. It just doesn't feel surprising to me that with those numbers, I'm choosing between the least worst option. And that's pretty straightforward this time.
