I believe they do background checks on potential nominees. So not a criminal investigation, but basically character interviews and such.

Yeah, the whole point of scheduling a hearing with no other witnesses or investigation was to make it upsetting enough to get her to back out. I have zero doubt that they are thrilled by this development.
