Pokemon Blue - Game Boy Color, 1998
It was really hard to pick between generations one anf two for a Pokemon game. Gold/Silver/Crystal are my favorites for actual game play for having 16 gyms, but I give the nod to Blue for kickstarting it all and also having tons of fun glitches and exploits. Getting level 100 Pokemon before the first gym is next level shit, then you have the Mew glitch, which through hexidecimal fuckery you can get any Pokemon you want to spawn. Plus the item cloning glitch to get 100+ master balls/rare candies/nuggets etc.
Why Blue over Red? Electabuzz, Scyther, Vileplume and Arcananine > their Red unique equivalents. The glitch I explained above renders it nil though.

I really think Contra is one of the finest games ever created, and it has something that modern action games haven't been able to replicate:
When you press start, you're launched immediately into the action. The downward 8-bit synth crescendo as your guy falls from the sky, enemies and power-ups immediately headed your way. There's no warm-up period, no "here's how the game works." You're just in the thick of it, and have to make do with your wits. By the end of Stage 1, you know everything you need to know about the game...until they throw the curveball at you of Stage 2 -- now it's a different POV!
Have any recent action games done anything like this? Immediately thrown you into the fray with intuitive controls and a pulse-pounding soundtrack?

Round 1 (12): The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch). I've been playing video games for 33 years and this is the best game that I've ever played. The best entry of the best franchise.
Round 2 (13): God of War (PS4). Of the major AAA franchises, this one has largest gap between the best entry and the second best entry. This game exceeded my expectations in every way imaginable.
Bada's up!

I'm pretty surprised Breath of the Wild took this long to be picked. My top choices were it, Tetris, and Mario 3.
I have no idea how people will vote or draft. I have some favorites in major franchises that I hope no one will pick before me.

I wish I didn't forget the video game subforum existed half the time; this would have been fun to get in on. Ah well, being a spectator and voting on matches will be pretty enjoyable. Some great drafts so far.

My Top 4 were BotW, Tetris, GoW, SMB3. We might be fighting each other throughout.
