I remember the first time I heard System on the Scream 3 soundtrack. It was also the first time I had heard Slipknot and Finger Eleven so I got a lot out of the album. Also, looking at the soundtrack this kind of encapsulates the nü-metal thread.
Code:
1. "What If" Creed 2. "Wait and Bleed (Terry Date Mix)" Slipknot 3. "Suffocate" Finger Eleven 4. "Spiders" System of a Down 5. "Automatic" American Pearl 6. "Fall" Sevendust 7. "Time Bomb" Godsmack 8. "Tyler's Song" Coal Chamber 9. "So Real" Static-X 10. "Crowded Elevator" Incubus 11. "Debonaire" Dope 12. "Sunburn" Fuel 13. "Get On, Get Off" Powerman 5000 14. "Wanna' Be Martyr" Full Devil Jacket 15. "Dissention" Orgy 16. "Crawl" Staind 17. "Click Click" Ear2000 18. "Is This the End" Creed
I always thought "What If" sounded exactly like an STP song off "Core."
I really hate the little guitar riff in the chorus of the "Higher" -- I don't know why, exactly, it just feels so cheesy and beer-commercial-ish to me. I liked Creed's first album at the time, but "Higher" really felt like they were trying to cash in on the Stapp-as-messiah-figure thing. Easy vote for System.

you mean that little lick they play between "can you take me higher" and "to a place where..."?
Man, I loved "Higher" when it first came out. It was the song that introduced me to Creed and made me a fan, which was part of the weird gateway I would eventually use to fall in love with Pearl Jam. I haven't listened to it in quite a while, and damn did it not age very well. Kevin's beer commercial analysis is spot on. Everything about the song feels fine tuned to sell something: records, pickup trucks, professional wrestling pay-per-views, you name it. It sounds as though the song has no artistry to it despite the band's capabilities elsewhere.
"Spiders" is great. A wonderful build up of tension throughout the song. I love what Serj does vocally in the crescendo. This is another song that's on my short list of favorites to win the tournament.

likes rhythmic things that butt up against each other

Although I'm not a huge fan of "Spiders" this Creed song is where my distaste for them really went to the next level. "Higher" is as generic as it comes. Warrant may as well have written this song.
