I gotta think that 5-6 is a more reasonable time? But maybe I'm being prudish. Totally open to being wrong here.
How strict have you been, or plan to be, on tv and ipad use?
Just based on stuff I’ve read, it seems that content gets more problematic for brain development as it becomes more “animated” — lots of fast edits, moving camera, on screen graphics, etc.
To that end, my kid is limited to Sesame Street, Curious George, and a taped production of Swan Lake. She’s also able to watch Mickey Mouse Club House when she’s at her grandmother’s, with I begrudgingly allow.
She’s a little over two now, and we limit her to two episodes a day, so about 50 minutes. And that’s only 2-4 days a week, certainly not every day. She didn’t watch a thing until she was 1, and we limited her to one ep a day until recently.
To tree’s point, the widely held view seems to be that TV’s impacts on the brain are part-and-parcel with time spent reading. We are absolutely crushing this aspect, probably read an average of six books a day together, some days it’s quite a bit more.

I want to make it clear that I’m not scolding tree or telling anyone I know the best way to raise their kid. Just sharing our approach based on what we’ve read.

Oh also, re iPad use: the only thing she gets to do is “baby phone,” where she looks at pic of herself on my iPhone. This is very rare, it’s a last resort I’d in trying to get her to calm down in a restaurant or something like that. Otherwise no iPads etc.
