Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Mon March 25, 2019 5:05 pm

Thought I'd start a thread for it since I'm sure some of us will be playing it for the next month or two.

Only a couple of hours in and I like how much of a departure/evolution it is from the Souls formula.

I want to play this, now. Do you think I will like it, despite not being able to play Bloodborne for very long?

Refresh my memory, what did you not like about Bloodborne? Something about the world/environment?

The overall aesthetic. I spose it's kinda like the opposite of what draws me to Mario games, to sum it up as quickly/concisely as I can at the moment. While Mario is easily accessible, innocent fun, Bloodborne is distant/aloof, dark, scary, vile, evil, unnerving, etc... I see it as a masterpiece and better than any Mario game I've ever played, but I'm afraid of it.

Got it.

This game isn't nearly as dark or disgusting as Bloodborne. The action is fast and fluid, but there is way more stealth and verticality.

The rock/paper/scissors nature of the combat is fun. So are all the various combat/weapon upgrades. Do you like dying a lot to formulate a gameplan on how to attach each area? Do you like games based on quick reflexes and enemy pattern recognition?

I'm not very far into the game, so I can't comment much on the story of progression.

Man, progress in this is so tough. Finally got past the ogre only to die at the hands of a samurai general with a another move set to memorize and counter. Love the world though.

You're not too far behind me. I ended up skipping the samurai general.

It is taking me awhile to learn how to approach each battle. You can use stealth to get an easy KO to the enemies that require multiple KOs. The ogre battle was significantly easier once I remembered you can jump to avoid his leaping grab. I still died way more times than I care to admit. Just got too greedy. Didn't help I spammed my prosthetic too much.

The blocking/posture system is really cool once you figure it out.

This game is incredible. I love the environments, the cutscenes and the fluidity of movement. You can tell it was made by the same people as Dark Souls, but what a departure!

It feels like the parry system with the firearms in Bloodborne is a precursor to this game's blocking/deflection mechanic. I can't wait to explore more.

I probably won't play this (I suck at games) but after watching a bit I love the design of it all. All the japanese lore, the prosthetic, and other things are really cool. It's a really pretty game as well.

Getting into a groove now. Have defeated several mini-bosses and two of the main bosses. I really like the upgrade and skill progression systems. More straightforward than the other series.

This is the kinda rare great game whose price tends to drop relatively soon after the release date, correct? I think I remember seeing Bloodborne depreciate in value rather quickly. Perhaps because the audience is kinda niche?

Single-player only games in general tend to drop not soon after release. Unless it is a Nintendo game. This will sell well with or without a price drop however.

RDR2 ain't droppin, is it? Why would it go on special sale if it's already selling really well? I bet it's more niche than you think.

It is a very pretty game and the 60 fps is huge. I worry these Samurai/Shin-obi games might be oversaturated soon (Nioh, this, Nioh 2, Ghost of Shushima), but the setting works with the gameplay.

I don't think tree_ and many others will be turned off by the world/creatures/environment nearly as much as the other games by From Software.

I've seen RDR2 on sale for $40 quite a bit as of late and it has a very popular multiplayer mode that will far outlive the single player experience in terms of relevance.

Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 have each sold over 3 million copies.
