Maybe?! Depends on if it is raining later. My dog needs to go for a walk.

I'm organizing an offline Mario Kart tournament on a 150" projector screen at my bar. I haven't played this game since the SNES days, so I've got a few questions here.

1. What's the definitive system to play this on now? I'm not necessarily looking for the best system. More like the most well-known system. I'm trying to tailor the field to welcome players of all skill levels and experience.

2. I pulled these rules off of REDDIT. Would most MK players find these fair?

Spoiler: show
Code:
X rounds, 4 people per round, no CPU, all items, random course (can be chosen course where each person gets a choice), 4 races per round, record the total points at the end of the round.

With 8 people you should find a way to randomize the racers in each round. For example the first round is

1 vs 2 vs 3 vs 4, and 5 vs 6 vs 7 vs 8

the next round could be:

1 vs 2 vs 7 vs 8 and 3 vs 4 vs 5 vs 6

then the next would be

1 vs 3 vs 5 vs 7 and 2 vs 4 vs 6 vs 8

After X rounds, total the points earned by each player across all rounds, and the top 4 play in Grand Finals. Grand Finals could be 8 races if you want. If there is a tie among players for 4th spot, it is settled with a time trial on a random map. After Grand Finals you will have a definitive 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place, and 4th place.

3. Is sound a must for this? I'd much rather play bar music if I can get away with it, but if I have to, I can restrict game sound to that zone of the building for all the nerds.

I have a local brewery coming out to give away the prizes and help me get some discounted kegs so I can offer $15 pitchers for everyone participating. Pretty excited about pulling this off.

Mario Kart 8 (Switch or Wii U) is the best in the series. It has several tracks from previous games and the four player multiplayer is smooth as butter and will look great on a projector.

MarioKart64 is definitive, in my mind. But MK8 and MKwii are the best.

Also, don't let people race as Mii characters. At the PAX tournaments they consider that cheating.

Thanks guys. I'll probably look into 64 for the cool factor but I bet I end up being able to source a console with 8 easier.

Isn't that what tree was doing in your RM league?

Sounds like a killer idea and a great time. I agree that Mario Kart 8 is the best choice.

This may be a controversial opinion, but outside of battle mode Mario Kart 64 is not that good.
