I still haven't played Lies of P, Armored Core, Final Fantasy XVI, Starfield, Cocoon, Pikmin 3, Baldur's Gate 3, etc. and it's still going to be very difficult to make a Top 5 list.

I know this is about games released in 2023, but I want to write a short introduction to what I have been playing anyway, even if the games I'm referencing are not games released this year.

I've played Star Wars Battlefront 2 more than any other game this year. Nothing else gives me that particular feeling when playing, which is a mix of excitement, straight into the action, sports like competition, comfort of knowing the game, but never knowing the outcome, and more. And I know if I have a few hours to myself in the evening (daughter sleeping, wife at work), it will give me the best feeling. That feeling and that perfect mix is what I am most looking for in a new game. Not easy to find. Halo 3 and Destiny 1 have done it in the past. Civilization 6 is another game, with somewhat different qualiies, but some of the same comfort, that I have played for hundreds of hours. I always play some FiFA every year, but it is so tense. Every sense on high alert to win, zero level of comfort, just all out action.

I got some of the big 2022 games just before New Year's Eve, in Elden Ring, God Of War: Ragnarok, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Horizon Forbidden West. And honestly, with their quality, and their cost, I'm almost embarassed how little I've played them. Modern Warfare 2 at least a fair amount. The other never got me going. However, FIFA 23 and Gran Turismo 7 were big 2022 game for me, that took a lot of time in 2023, as well as getting Halo Infinite (2021 game) in late 2022, which I should still play a lot more.

Finally, here are the games released in 2023 that I own:

Metroid Prime Remastered
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Starfield
Star Wars Jedi Survivor
Hogwarts Legacy
Forza Motorsport
EA Sports FC 24
Pinball FX
AEW Fight Forever
Destiny 2: Lightfall

I think I have played at least a couple more, but this I what I can think of now. Currently playing Super Mario Bros. Wonder and EA Sports FC 24, and I think those two will end up being my most played games of the year, at least in the short run (in 2023 itself). Jedi Survivor and Hogwarts Legacy I'm still early in, and hopefully I end up playing them a respectable amount. Starfield has been good, but I've not gone back to it in more than a month. Metroid Prime I've barely played. Forza could be a big game in time, once I get warmed up to it. The AEW game has not been a hit with me so far. Lightfall I've barely touched. I do love Pinball FX, just so expensive buying all the boards. But I do play it 10-30 minutes here and there, nearly every week.

It’s obviously Zelda

Of the major releases, I only played Zelda, Mario and Starfield.

My vote is for Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It's the best game that I've ever played.

Wasn't a big fan of the previous Zelda, and heard this was similar. So haven't gotten it so far.

Yeah, it's Tears of the Kingdom for me too. I haven't come close to finishing it, but it's still the best game I've played this year.

I agonized over whether or not to buy a switch for the last Zelda. Just looked so much fun. But the new one looks too sandboxy for me.

Expand on sandboxy. What in particular turns you off? The viral clips of Zonai mechs don't really capture the true spirit of the game (exploration and experimentation).

It’s all the experimentation, the cobbling together of random objects to create new tools. For me personally one of those things that would be cool at first, but would probably stall narrative momentum and my longterm engagement (see Fallout 4, Witcher, etc).

That's kinda my feeling about it as well, but I could be wrong.

The game is so incredibly well designed. It strikes the perfect balance of rewarding creativity without anything feeling too frustrating. I usually dislike those elements in games as well, but ToTK makes it a true strength.

No feature feels shoehorned in. Every gameplay element works in harmony.

I just haven’t had enough time to play everything, but my favorite is probably Starfield. That being said, *best* would be either Hi-Fi Rush or Lies of P.

If Alan Wake 2 is as good as advertised, probably overtakes both.

With all these votes for it, I just have to try it. Got two vouchers now, and chose Tears Of The Kingdom for the first one. Not sure what my second choice should be. Pikmin 4 and Super Mario RPG two possibilities. I do like Mario games though. Will RPG be in the discussion in this thread?
