i hate Getaway.
i remember that promo video that came out before LB, and the ending was Ed and that dude sitting in the car and Getaway starts again, and Ed starts jamming out.

It's primarily the production aesthetic, though the performance itself seems to takes cues from that faux-bohemian campfire festival stomp-along vibe that I hate in popular music, so that's not doing it any favours either.
It's just an overwhelmingly unpleasant song to listen to.

This feels completely off the mark. When I hear "Sleeping By Myself", both in the instrumental arrangement and in the harmonic and melodic turns it takes, it seems very clear that they're going for an older, AM radio country-ditty feel; I hear Loudon Wainwright, the Louvin Brothers, Felice and Boudleaux Bryant (the vocal harmonies at the very end being the first and only time Pearl Jam has sounded like the Everly Brothers). Plus, the stomp-alongs you speak of strive for an overall bigness that I think is completely absent from "Sleeping By Myself", which, even in its few moments of release, feels modest and quaint. I like this song a lot.

I don't know, I think it's what Matt's playing and an underlying bounce that comes from Ed having written the song on the ukulele.
I agree that it's not a big, bombastic example of that vibe - it's that rhythm that I find so unbearable, though, that jaunty shuffle.
