I don't like to let Mecca down. So here it is.
We're gonna attempt an NFL Franchise Tournament on whatif. We need 8 teams. We'll have everyone play everyone twice, with a playoff at the end for the championship. Same rules apply as in the MLB and NHL Franchise Tournaments regarding eligible players. It has to be a season the player spent with said team (for example, the Green Bay Packers cannot use 2009 Brett Favre, and the Minnesota Vikings cannot use 1996 Brett Favre), and a player can only appear on each roster once (the Detroit Lions cannot have three different Barry Sanderses on their depth chart). There is no payroll limit. Each team is comprised of 23 skill players (3 QBs, 3 RBs, 4 WRs, 3 TEs, and 5 other players from any of those skill positions), an defensive unit, an offensive line, a special teams unit (these are selected by whole squads), a kicker, and a punter.

He's a Broncos guy, right?
Finally, a sport I know enough of to actually be able to play in one of these. Put me down for the Broncos.
On the one hand, I hate how the simulation, just like most fantasy football, breaks down the skill positions but not the defense. On the other hand, I'd probably end up cramming most of my defense with 2015 Broncos anyway.
I should probably get a refresher on any other general rules I should be aware of.

But count me in for a Chiefs team. I fully expect to get my shit pushed in because no one cares about The Chiefs. But I'll play. Why not.
Vermeil era offense + Schottenheimer era defense could be very formidable. And that's not even counting all the great players they had in the 60s-early 70s.

The only rules you need to know right now are the ones in the main post about eligible players. Since we haven't done a football one yet, we'll have a bit of discussion about specifics before we start the season. For now what you'll probably find best is to just open a whatif account, start putting your team together, and then run some simulations against various historical teams to get a feel for how whatif works.
For the football simulations the person running the team controls the depth chart for each game, as well as the play-calling style (Balanced, Pass Heavy, Run Heavy, or West Coast). The depth charts appear to be like the lineups in baseball, where they default to whatever the team owner had them set as in his last simulation, so you'll be responsible for making sure you have your desired depth chart ready and loaded before each game. I'll (or if someone else is filling in for me, they'll) set your play-calling mode when I run the simulations.
The weather is also a variable, but we'll discuss here how we want to do that (I'm thinking right now we'll let the home team set the weather, but they'll be required to keep it realistic based on where they're located and what point of the season it is).
