So did Jeff Reardon, let's throw him in there too.

If he's really gone for good, I am wondering if anyone here wants to make a "pro" case for this fella:

Seems to strike me as a modern day Phil Simms, in more way than one. Hopefully he's actually better at his post-retirement job than Simms, though.

If I was going to make the "pro" case for Romo, it'd be all about the per numbers, which are incredibly impressive.

ANY/PA: 7.03 (4th all-time)
Completition %: 65.3% (5th all-time)
Passer Rating: 97.1 (4th all-time)

Rodgers, Brady, and Manning are above him in 2 out of 3 of those categories, and besides a few outliers (like Chad Pennington in comp.%) you're looking at the best of the best in the pass-happy era. If you wanted to argue Romo in, you'd basically be making a case similar to Terrell Davis.

How so? The the big pro for Davis was dominating postseason performances that resulted in two rings, with the con being that he had a short career. Romo's a bit of the opposite: a longish, steady career of above average performance, but notoriously subpar playoff performances.

Shit, if you're going to put Romo in, then Bledsoe and Esiason almost have to get in too

To clarify: I'm imagining the case someone would have to make; I don't think he's in, ever. But I do think it'd be a similar case, just not exactly the same: yeah, his career was longer, but QBs tend to have longer careers than running backs anyways. And he was cut down by injuries right after his career-best season and a dominating playoff performance. If Dez Bryant catches that ball, I think the conversation might be different.

Yes.

Spoiler: show
Jerry Jones will buy him the votes.

Dez did the catch that ball and the conversation should be different.

So it goes.

the NFL HoF is a joke.

Brian Mitchell hasn't even sniffed it, and he is number 2 all time, in combined all purpose yards behind only Jerry Rice (who played 6 or 7 more seasons.)

Don't even give me the argument he did it on special teams. the number of records he holds on special teams is insane.

Combined kickoff and punt return yards: 19,013
Combined kickoff and punt returns: 1,070
Kickoff return yards: 14,014
Kickoff returns: 607
Punt return yards: 4,999
Punt returns: 463
Fair catches: 231
Fair catches in a single season(2000): 33
All-purpose yards by any player against a single opponent: 3,076 against the Dallas Cowboys
Kickoff return yards in postseason: 875
Kickoff returns in postseason: 36
Punt return yards in postseason: 339
Punt returns in postseason: 34-tied with David Meggett
Combined return yards in postseason: 1,214
Combined returns in postseason: 70
Games with 100 all purpose yards: 118
Games with 200 all purpose yards: 15
All-purpose yards on Sunday games only: 20,818
All-purpose yards in a single decade (1990–1999): 16,905
Combined return yards on Sunday games only: 16,957
Most rushing yards in a game by a player with 3 attempts or less: 105, on 2 attempts; 10/1/2000
Oldest player to have an 85+ yard run: 32 years, 44 days

Special teams and secondary are criminally ignored in the NFL HoF, it's totally true.

As of right now, he's an easy no. But he's got a hell of a peak under his belt and at this point probably just needs to do some compiling for a bunch of years.

If he keeps this going for another 2 or 3 years beyond this season, he's got that 7 year peak that everyone likes in a HoFer. I think he's closer than you're giving him credit for.
