I was playing around on WhatIfSports.com for the first time in forever when I saw that you can put together "Dream Teams" and match them up against other dream teams now. It got me thinking, and I was curious as to if anyone would want to take part in a dream team tournament. I figured we'd limit it to the 90s since all of the baseball nerds on here seem well versed in that decade, and I think it's more fun to dig deeper into what we're all familiar with than to skim amongst the elite from 110+ years worth of baseball. I'm open to widening it up though, maybe go 1980-today or something. I dunno, it all depends on if anyone else wants to try this.
It looks like you need to draft at least 12 position players and six pitchers for a WhatIfSports team. We could do twenty rounds of picks. It also looks like you pick each player from a specific year, so a dude with only one great year is just as valuable as a dude with 15 great years, since you have to pick a specific year. But yeah, I'm thinking we could have the site simulate seven game series once the teams are set. I dunno. I'm just spit-balling here. If there's interest I'll do some more research as to ways to decide winners, but I figure the simulations are better than voting.
So yeah. If anybody wants to try this, or try to do something like this, I'd be game to try to run it. We can deal with all the details once we establish whether or not there's any interest.
Alright, so we're definitely doing this. It's going to be post-strike era seasons only (1995-2013). We will all draft teams, and then run them through the WhatIfSports Dream Team simulators in best of seven series, with the winners advancing.
Some rules...
1. There will be 25 rounds of picks. Each team needs at least 12 position players (C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, three OFs, and four utility players of any position as designated by the site) and 6 pitchers.
2. A player can only appear on one team, even though you ultimately decide on a single season for them. So for instance, whoever picks Roger Clemens gets whichever post-strike Clemens season he wants, and no one else can take a different one. You don't have to decide which season of theirs you want until we begin the tournament, though.
3. You need to pick and designate a home ballpark, since the site takes that into consideration in its simulations.
4. Each person has two hours to make their picks. The clock is suspended between 10PM & 8AM Eastern time. Picks can still be made in that window, but people whose clocks start after 10 can't be skipped until the clock starts again. We do still strongly encourage you to send a few proxy picks to someone who isn't picking again until after you before you head to bed.
5. If your turn comes up and you're still on the hook for a previous pick where your time ran out, you'll receive a one hour slot instead of two. If you're on the hook for two picks and your turn comes up a third time, you'll be skipped instantly till you return and pick. Once you catch up, you're back to the standard two hours.

Sounds fun to me.
WILL THE SIMULATION HAVE AN ANTI-STEROID BIAS!?!?!

Can you draft three different Barry Bonds and have him man your whole OF? Or multiple Maddux's?

I would want to keep it to each player can only appear on one team, regardless of season. But if everyone disagreed, we could theoretically have people picking the same player, but from different years.
WhatIfSports produce a box score and a play-by-play recap of every simulation, so if we can find a way to do with the free options on their site, this could actually be pretty cool.

On second thought, having multiple Maddux's in the OF sounds like a terrible idea.

Alright, I played around a bit with the Dream Team simulations, and we can definitely make this happen.
So we'll do a 20 round draft. Every team needs at least twelve position players and six pitchers. Also, you need to choose what historical stadium is your team's home ballpark (they take this kind of stuff into consideration in the simulations).
So that leaves these two questions/options...
1. Should we have a period limit on players? Or should it be any season from any point in baseball history? I personally would prefer to keep it contemporary with whoever ends up joining.
2. Should we let players appear on multiple teams as long as they're taking different seasons? I'd prefer not to. So there can only be one Bonds/Maddux/Clemens/etc.

Alright, well between phil, 4/5, BRL, and me, we've at least got enough for an LCS style playoff.
I'm sure some of the other guys from the MLB thread would be interested. Question, though: are we allowing the Red Sox fans to participate? Maybe we should have a vote.

This seems really cool, but there's no way my personal knowledge would suffice for a draft like this. Is there a rankings list/cheat sheet to go off of, or do you have to search for specific players/positions?
