So I haven't really run in about a year, but shortly before I stopped I was capable of finishing a half marathon. What's the best approach to starting again? Also, what would be the smartest running accessory that one with a $20 gift card to Luke's Locker could buy?

I need a workout partner to get rid of this developing gut. Can I join?

You take care of those knees, guy. Start slow. Rebuild. Buy yourself a nice headband with that gift card. Best to keep the sweat from pouring into your eyes as you try and rebuild your running career!

I own plenty of shirts like that, and shorts. And socks. And I can make a headband out of a bandanna. But I have this $20 gift card and I don't want it to just go to waste. I just got a new pair of shoes, so putting it towards something like that won't do either.

It's the most comprehensive running store in Houston. Pretty much anything running-related is up for grabs, except books.
I was thinking more along the lines of either a pouch, some reflectors, or possibly just gels.
Go with the pouch or gels. Skip the reflectors. It's not your job to be seen at night, it's your job to be aware of your surroundings and not have assholes fuck with you.
reflectors arent a bad idea. But i wouldnt buy them separate. Just get clothing or shoes with that stuff on. Sure, its not your job to be seen but with the increase in texting and driving related accidents....
Maybe put them towards some nice clip on ear phones so that the sweat wont push them out and you will have a nice snug fit while you listen to your favorite musical artists.

A headband? Seriously?

Do you use a pouch? I've always been wary of the added weight, but on your endorsement I might give it a try. Especially since the pedometer that I use is on my phone.

How about a back-to-basics regimen, '2black? I'm thinking of walking for about a week and then warming up to whatever I can do in mile increments. Too slow?

I only use one when I take my cell phone on long runs (25+) on a desert trail and I'm worried about losing a trail (on most of the trails around PHX you still get a signal). I'll stuff extra gels and salt tabs in there too. Go with one of the super-stretchy ones. I have a SPIbelt that a friend bought me.

Keep it simple. Just focus on distance at first. Don't worry about times at all. Measure a 10-mile out-and-back route from your doorstep with MapMyRun or your pedometer and remember the mile markers. Hit mile 1 then back (for 2 total), then slowly build to 10 miles. Wait a month or two before worrying about times. Skip the walking.
Edit: Insert minimalist rant here.

When is the RM Running Convention Meetup happening?
San Diego?
Morning run followed by an afternoon surf. Works for me.
Went for a 500m after work yesterday after having worked out my shoulders, chest and tri-ceps at lunch. Most of my upper body felt on fire walking back upstairs. Lookinf forward to seeing how today's swim goes after doing back, abs and biceps at lunch.
