There was a point in the NFL season during which the Vikings were the most likely team in the entire league to both reach and win the Super Bowl, so please remember that before we get too carried away with what I’m about to share.

(Deep breath).

Your Minnesota Wild, owing to a tremendously nice first half of the NHL season in which it has racked up 69 points, shows up in the No. 1 spot of Sports Insights’ “most likely teams in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals” list, one which is compiled by looking at betting odds. Capitals-Wild is first on the list, followed closely by Capitals/Blackhawks.

It feels weird saying this based on what it's been like the last decade or so, but... it's a much easier path for the Wild to come out of the West than it is for whichever team wins the East. The East is far, far better right now.

It's true.

There has got to be more punishment for that, right?

He wasn't even ejected from the game. Looks like he will be having an in person interview with the NHL safety commission or whatever. The guy has to be suspended. That was atrocious. He is defending himself saying his stick got caught and he did not intend to do that. B.S. He looked right at him then speared his face.

This seems like an easy one to determine intent and give him a hefty suspension. That was hard to watch.

Chances are he'll get two games. Maybe he can get it down to one if he can convince the league it was an accident, which seems really easy to do.

I read/heard(?) that there is a minimum five or six game suspension for players that have to meet with the safety commission.

Anybody else pulling for Backstrom to win the Art Ross?

He's been one of the most underrated superstars of the last decade, so it would be pretty cool to see. 30 points in his last 19 games!

There are six players within three points of the lead right now. The best story, by far, would be Brent Burns... a defenseman leading the league in scoring would be unbelievable.

I think Crosby's been easily the best this year, though.

Nyquist suspended 6 games for high-sticking Spurgeon.

Definitely. And yet I'm still surprised the NHL went that high, which really says a lot about the expectations they've set over the last few years.

if giving a love tap to a ref is 1 game, thinking through and striking someone to the face with full intention of hurting them has to be 20

i get in any sport you cannot make contact with a ruling official and personally i would have been fine with him getting at least 5 to drive home the point

Can you guys imagine what that high stick felt like? That's the most brutal thing I have seen in a hockey game since Bertuzzi's punch. That should almost be a career ender.

I brought my son to his first NHL game tonight and we cheered on a Wild win. He had an awesome time, and I loved watching him soak it all in more than anything. Being a father is the best joy ever.
