Went for a small run today. My wife had gone into the city and when I'd finished doing stuff around the house I took off and told her to pick me up on the way back. Only made it 4.4km 22:35

I was really starting to fade at that point. Too hot, too many hills and I hadn't eaten for over 12 hours

So in ideal conditions you could have done that in 19:30. Got it.

Not likely!

Think I'm gonna go get some new running shoes today

Those should take a minute off each mile.

Very nice! How long had it been since you've ran? I can't imagine doing 5 miles after a longish break.

Decided to see how far I could go at a moderate pace without walking. Got to around 1.90. I could have gone farther, but knowing I was going to do 3 miles total i wanted to save some energy to finish the last mile at a faster pace. Overall pace was slower than it has been recently, but I fully expected that.

Had to really talk myself out of not going today so I’m glad I did go.

That's solid. You're really making some improvements, len.

I'm behind on training this week. Missed Tuesday (run #1 for the week) because the toddler kept both my wife and I up and I felt guilty shagging off to leave her to deal with it. The rest of the day was loaded and I just never could get away.

My weeks are usually monday off, run tues-thurs, friday off, long run saturday, cross train sunday. Now I have a choice:

1. Four days in a row starting today and culminating with a 9-mile long run on Saturday
2. Run today thru Friday, rest Saturday, replace cross training with 9-mile long run on Sunday
3. Write yesterday's run off altogether, then continue as normal with one less run (today, tomorrow, off, 9 mile Saturday, cross Sunday)

Leaning towards option #2. I feel like the cushion of rest before the long run is the most important thing.

I know the Goggins/Dev way to do this would be to not be soft and just fucking run every day, but I'm way more of a Higdon guy and will not disrespect my muscles with hubris and fatigue.

Thank you. Just need to get the distance with speed better aligned to keep making progress and hit my goal.

Yeah I’m team listen to your body, but as we know we all really only have ours to go by at the end of the day. But it’s great her you have multiple options that shouldn’t mess up your preparation.

I forget - did you have a pace goal for this race?

How many times do I have to tell you? Throw speed out the window. Speed will come, or not. Work on distance/endurance and you'll learn to run for life.

Yeah, I want to do it in less than two hours which is 9:08 I think? I know I just said "throw speed out the window" in the previous post, but for a race I think a reasonably challenging goal within one's limits is part of the fun.
