Guys, I'm doing something a little crazy. Friday 9 folks and myself are doing the Flaming Foilage Relay: Idaho Springs to Buena Vista. Three mountain passes, 160 miles, completed in 28 hours. I've done 2 night runs just to get used to that feeling of running late and in the dark. Done a few high elevation runs. I was running about 8 miles a week until 5 weeks ago when I was asked to join. This is the first time I've trained for anything and I really enjoyed the "focus" of it. I don't know if a relay will happen again, but I think races will be something I try to get involved with.
I don't post much at all, but Lenny you are such a positive person. Thanks for building everyone up!
Good luck. Sounds intense. I have a friend who does those adventure race things and he's done a couple 24 hour races. It's madness

can you even enjoy your run like that? slow down man it's not a race
I enjoy it for about thirty seconds, then I spend about three minutes thinking "why am I doing this", then I settle into a pace and start to enjoy it again. Look at the corn, wave to passing trucks. I actually do think I need to start a little slower, though. My first mile is always a lot faster than the others. I don't feel like my heart is causing me trouble.

First run in a little over a month.
3.5 miles 9:59/mi pace Average HR 161
Clearly out of shape since my half marathon last spring, but not out of control. Looking forward to doing some work.
The run itself was majestic. There's a flood basin a little outside of town that is hilly and grassy. No one around. Super clear day and temps comfortably warm. I felt like I was out on a trail expedition.

I remember I was in Miami when it happened. I was posting from the balcony of my apartment overlooking the beach. And I was having an argument with Adamdude.
what are you guys using to track heart rate, pace, etc?

Enjoy every bit of that training. Sounds like a hard but weirdly enjoyable race. Night time running is a special kind of solitude.

I won a Coros Pace 2 watch after signing up for a sponsored virtual mileage challenge a little while ago. I like it a lot, but it's a 200 dollar item that wouldn't buy it on my own. The stats are a fun gauge of fitness but not essential for recreational running. Definitely helps me train for races though.
Prior to that, I used a $30 mi band from a chinese company on Amazon. Tracked HR okay, but I was using it mostly just for GPS data. Couldn't really do much analytics with it that I can with my Coros.

would you be more specific?
The Coros phone app tied with the watch gives you all sorts of info that integrates with the data you give it from your runs. It will pull your pace and HR from a run and give you an overall 7-day fitness grade, give you an idea where you're at with fatigue so you can rest, you can program guided HR type workouts, it can estimate a race pace with reasonable accuracy, etc.
Most watches like this can do this at entry level, and then somehow the more expensive ones can do even more.
The battery life is great too. My battery always runs out because I forget that I'm supposed to charge it after about 2 weeks of not charging it
