Explain the whole rotation thing to me. Why switch your shoes from one run to the next, and cycle through again (and again…). Why not find good ones and use them regularly.

Well for starters, if I know I'm hitting a trail, I'll put on different shoes than I would wear if I was running on roads. More grip, sturdier upper. That's one shoe in rotation.
Then on days where I want to do a speedy run, like a tempo or a sprinting-type workout, I'll wear these very lightweight shoes with a low stack. I wouldn't want to race a half marathon in these because they wouldn't be comfortable, but they're great for speedwork. That's two.
Then I have my daily trainers. The ones I put the most miles on. They're comfortable and can do short and long distances. Work horses. However, due to high mileage, I don't want to race in these. That's three.
Which brings us to the race day shoe. This one is just for long runs on the weekend to get used to the feel on long distances. Keeping the mileage relatively low before race day, I can work out any surprises in those long runs but also keep the miles low in the spirit of freshness for race day. Haven't decided between these two yet so I'm going to alternate week to week in the rotation. Four and five.
There's more to it, like switching between 0 drops and 4mm drops with a few of those shoes to distribute stress in different areas (like what lenny was alluding to I think). Also, I wouldn't need to decide between those last two shoes for the half marathon if I could find another pair of those daily trainers I posted in my size and a colorway I like. They're discontinued, or else I'd have duplicates in rotation. I love the Kinvara 11s so much.

That all makes sense, especially road vs. trail. I could see having multiple pairs for that reason, mainly to keep the road ones from getting dirty with trail mud.
I can see how the racing part enters the equation. I don’t race.
I'm not going to do any long runs anytime soon, at least not on a consistent basis, so I think the only thing I should consider is getting another pair for speedwork if I start doing intervals.
3 miles in 28:10. Weather may suck the next few days so may try to go out again tomorrow for an easy three.
3 miles in 29:10. Went pretty easy the first two miles, but turned it up a bit on the third. I’m sure I could have had a better pace if I pushed harder, but it felt good so I’m content.
Correction above: Today was 29:12. I apologize for the mistake.
I just did 1.5 on the Greenway and turned around. I love going there. It has a few running streams, is open in parts and well shaded in others. There's a disc golf course nearby and a few of the holes are near the route I go.
The weather was overcast and wet, but around 70 degrees. I didn't rain while I was out there. Felt pretty nice overall though with a slight breeze.

That's pretty much exactly where and how I like to run. Maybe wish it was a little cooler. Who funds your Greenway? are there any new segments or renovations in the works?

My body has been running kinda cold this week despite the warmer weather, but otherwise yeah I'd like it cooler.
I'm not sure since they are in a few different cities in the county. And one in the county due west. For the one I typically go to, there is an offshoot that's around 3/4th's of a mile. I do like going on it, but it's been quite awhile. There are more of the disc golf holes that run up toward it so sometimes you have to be on the lookout for discs. Supposedly that route is supposed to eventually lead to another shorter one somewhat nearby. I've never been to it since it's a really short one and I much prefer longer ones, but when/if they're connected I think it's going to be something like an 8-10 mile stretch.
I tried out the one across town a few weeks ago, and while I liked the part of the route I went on well enough, it crosses a road and I'm not a fan of that. There's another near me that does the same, but it appears to be a little easier to cross. I need to hit it up again.
