The board's server will undergo upgrade maintenance tonight, Nov 5, 2014, beginning approximately around 10 PM ET. Prepare for some possible down time during this process.
Although I am having second thoughts about the August 50K. Mostly because the timing of it fucks up the 2nd half of the year for me. And because I'm soft.

So believe it or not, Jim Walmsley wasn't at my bar yesterday...(!)
...but I did have a pretty amazing conversation with a 65 year old finisher from Corpus Christi who did it in a little under four hours. Next year he will get his tenth Houston marathon in. One of the nicest people I've ever met. He wanted to talk my ear off and he pretty much told me what R2D did when it came to preparing for a race. Basically, that it's possible but will take a serious commitment. Hal Higdon's program came up and he wrote down "Google: Hal Higdon+Novice+Running Program" on a napkin and handed it to me with his business card. Dude runs a combination tractor service/plant sales/design business and on the card is a grainy image of what looks like some forceps and a pair of leather work gloves.
He also invited me to go fishing and running with him if I'm ever in Corpus, so I might actually take him up on that. Even though I've run a total of seven miles in the last six months, the enthusiasm and warmth that he had when he talked about running made me feel welcome in his world. So yeah, you guys are right. Running is great and the people who do it are great too.

I could destroy any ai chatbot you put in front of me. Easily.
With this post I wanna address the other boys running in the snow. I think you are thinking of winter running the wrong way. I think winter running is like running at a high elevation. It works you harder so it's good training. All that matters is that you kill yourself and break a sweat. Embrace it. It's just as fun as summer running.
For that matter, I figure running 5km in -20 is about the same as running 10km in the summer.

Cut the divisive shit, R2D. We are a brotherhood.
There's nothing divisive about it. I'm trying to give you advice, you're doing your typical macho (even though you ran less than 300 miles in a year) bullshit.
What do you have planned for the 2nd half of the year? Thinking about Chicago?
Nothing specific yet, but if I wanted to do a second "fast" marathon this year (which I think I do) I'd have to jump back into training right after the 50k. So 3 marathon+ races and ~40 straight weeks of training. I mean I love running, but that sounds...not ideal. If I dropped the 50k I could take it easy this summer and focus on a late fall race, maybe even find a less challenging 50k to jump into.
This is all brought on by how much I'm enjoying the speed workouts atm, which could change.

None of this is even remotely correct.
Running in colder weather (as long as it's not icy) is easier on the muscles and the heart.

oh, and those are just facts eh?
what about the lungs? what about the V02 and the lactate?
I'll tell you what is a fact.
You work different muscles in icy conditions. and that's the biggest problem with just be a runner. you over work specific muscles and don't get a rounded workout. I bet I will achieve better lifetime running stats but running half the season and biking/hockey the other half of the season than I would if I just ran all season long. Of course, this could differ by individual.
