Over the past 5 years I've been getting into baseball a lot more. I don't really have a team so much as I like watching a good game.
Give me a great narrative and I'm all in. October is a magical time of the year.

That said, do a lot of people watch with the sound muted? Or somehow sync the radio broadcast to the tv?
I can't listen to anymore Joe Buck and John Smoltz calling the Braves and Dodgers.

Their target audience has to be little league and people watching baseball for the first time.
And I don't understand the true hate for Joe Buck. I don't think my reasoning here is part of it though? Because also the announcers on TBS are fucking lame too.
Literally, it's common knowledge Joe Buck is the worst to the point that now I'm out of the loop and will never know why it's general knowledge.

In contrast, the Tampa Bay Rays WDAE radio sportscasters were saying last night they were ok taking heat from Rays fans because they wanted to get into the interesting shit. They were talking about how the Rays only scored in something like 5 of their past 26 innings and their offense hasn't been showing up.
That's the kind of narrative building information I need to get drawn in.
Rays are close to sweeping the Astros* That's good reason to watch!

Always in the past post seasons there have been great narratives.

- The Cubs hadn't won since 19-whatever and had to buck their curse, and then they were playing the Indians who also hadn't won in forever.
- A couple years ago the Yankees were a young team coming into their own. Not expected to make it far into the playoffs but there they were.
- The Nationals were a team of veteran, older players and the underdogs, and they ended up winning against the Astros. Insane pitching by both teams. And some funny pitching choices in game 7.

Though probably I'm just more of a curmudgeon this year.
Covid has really screwed up talking baseball with friends and coworkers for me.

Town, I give you an A for effort but that was really hard to follow.

That said, Joe Buck deserves every ounce of your hatred.

I hear ya lol

Basically, what do you do when you've outgrown the tv broadcast which caters to a general audience?
This year seems worse than past years. Lots of especially grating sportscasting tropes and lame banter without getting into why the team and player matchups are compelling.

I think in most years you're having a good time watching the game with other people so even when the presentation isn't the best you don't notice or care.

Maybe mlb.tv has better broadcasting... I wonder.

If the question “Do you watch on mute?” was buried in there, yes, I watch sports on mute a lot these days. Mainly so I don’t add to the noise pollution that is my kids whining or screaming about something all the time in my house.

Mostly yes, I’ve been watching on mute. Believe it or not it used to be even worse with Tim McCarver in the 90’s.

I actually like Smoltz.

McCarver was awful, in addition to be being boring etc., he would fixate on endless criticism of the players(always non-white) he hated.

Terrible broadcasting, part of the tradition of baseball. Got it!
I never thought about racist sportscasters but yeah they were alive and well weren't they...

I'll keep an open mind about Smoltz then. If I don't keep it muted haha
