I think that TUF finale should have gone to a fourth round.

Kelvin fought a good first round, but the other two could have gone either way, and one could have easily been a draw.

Regardless,they'll both probably get contracts.

it was close but I do agree with that Gastelum decision. I felt he was more the aggressor and made the most of his time on top.

With a 6 figure contract and a HD bike on the line, it should have been a 5 round fight anyway....but I'm sure no one expected it to go the distance - nor for KG to win it!

indeed. Good fights all around last night though. AND 2 elbow knock outs to boot.

**Here are the full results from Sat night’s TUF 17 Finale in front of 5,549 and a gate of $569,000 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center (it was scaled much lower than a usual UFC pay-per-view as the venue holds about 13,000 with the regular configuration).
*Daniel Pineda over Justin Lawrence by kimura at 1:35 of Round 1
*Maximo Blanco over Sam Sicilia by unanimous decision (29-28 all)
*Cole Miller over Bart Palaszewski by rear-naked choke at 4:23 of Round 1
*Clint Hester over Bristol Marunde by RKO at 3:53 of Round 3
*Dylan Andrews over Jimmy Quinlan by TKO at 3:22 of Round 1
*Luke Barnatt over Collin Hart by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
*Josh Samman over Kevin Casey by TKO at 2:17 of Round 2
*Bubba McDaniel over Gilbert Smith by triangle choke at 2:49 of Round 3
*Travis Browne over Gabriel Gonzaga by KO at 1:11 of Round 1
*Cat Zingano over Miesha Tate by TKO at 2:55 of Round 3
*Kelvin Gastelum over Uriah Hall by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) to win the TUF contract
*Urijah Faber over Scott Jorgensen by rear-naked choke at 3:16 of Round 4

**The following were the recipients of the $50,000 bonuses handed out after the show:
*Fight of the Night – Cat Zingano vs. Miesha Tate
*Knockout of the Night – Travis Browne
*Submission of the Night – Daniel Pineda

**The show was not without controversy as both the Zingano vs. Tate and Browne vs. Gonzaga fights had issues with the stoppages. Tate was furious that Kim Winslow stopped her fight in the third round as she felt she was still in the fight and was premature. That is a real tough one to swallow if you are Tate as she was up on the score cards winning the first two rounds and realistically sets her back a minimum of a year by losing out on the coaching spot and a big money fight with Ronda Rousey, with the winner not available until around this time in 2014. In the Browne vs. Gonzaga fight, Gonzaga was clinching up against the cage when Browne started dropping elbows, which at first were to the side of the head and then definitely hit at least one elbow to the back of the head as Gonzaga went out.

**CM Punk and Amy Dumas attended the TUF 17 Finale Sat night in Las Vegas as the WWE crew had the weekend off from house shows.

**UFC president Dana White announced on the show that TUF will be moving to Fox Sports 1 (which will be the re-branded Speed Channel with the conversion taking place August 17th) and will be one of the major shows pushed on the new network. Taping for the 18th season will begin in June with coaches Ronda Rousey and Cat Zingano and premiere in September.

**Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen were also live at the show and interviewed together by Jon Anik and Jones could not possibly have come off worse if he tried. Jones had zero interest in being interviewed, gave quick answers and wouldn’t even look at Sonnen while Sonnen did his best to sell the fight. It was a terribly awkward interview and I would flat out say unprofessional on Jones’ part where promotion is a huge piece of the job. You cannot go on conference calls saying you want to fight guys that will help make you the most money on pay-per-view and then tank promotional interviews and it’s become a giant pet peeve for me of the top fighters, who understandably get worn out by the constant media and lack of variety in questions but at the end of the day this is a job and especially on a UFC broadcast, you suck it up and do the 2-minute interview. The only positive I took away from this segment was that if you watched it you cannot help but root for Sonnen to beat this guy, who came across so arrogant and unlikeable.

**Fight Network will be carrying the UFC on FOX 7 weigh-ins tomorrow night at 7pm EST on the network.

**Bellator announced today that they have signed former UFC light heavyweight Vladimir Matyushenko, who is 42-years old. This is an interesting one as he is the first ex-UFC talent they have signed since starting on Spike TV. Bellator has announced that he will not be entering a tournament for his first fight.

**MMA official Josh Rosenthal has pleaded guilty in the state of California to charges of conspiracy to manufacture and distribute marijuana along with a charge of possession with intent to distribute following an arrest in 2012. A raid of a warehouse that Rosenthal had a stake in was found to have 1,356 marijuana plants with a street value of over $6-million. Rosenthal was facing up to ten-years in prison and a fine of $10-million but it is expected to be reduced significantly based on his guilty plea with sentencing set for May 17th.

**The TUF 17 Finale this past Saturday did a 1.2 rating and averaged 1,710,000 viewers headlined by Urijah Faber vs. Scott Jorgensen and is the second largest audience the UFC has averaged since moving over to FOX in 2012.

**Jon Jones was on UFC Tonight on Tuesday and stated that he believes Chael Sonnen has low testosterone because he abused steroids during his prime and it has hurt his testosterone levels.

**Ariel Helwani also reported on UFC Tonight that welterweight Demian Maia wants to fight Nick Diaz next as just about all of the welterweights have fights lined up at the moment. Maia has looked excellent since cutting down from middleweight, going 3-0 with his most fight being a dominant shut down of Jon Fitch at UFC 156.

PRELIMINARY CARD (5pm EST on FX)
*Lorenz Larkin vs. Francis Carmont
*Darren Elkins vs. Chad Mendes

**Chael Sonnen was a guest this week on Steve Austin’s new podcast at http://www.podcastone.com/program?actio ... gramID=436. In the interview Sonnen chats about his 1998 tryout at the WCW Power Plant, which was runny by DeWayne Bruce (who wrestled as Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker at the time in WCW) and compared it to a boot camp where they just drilled the guys and it was down to two of them (Sonnen included) by the second day but once Sonnen finished university WCW had gone out of business. The story that is getting the most attention is Sonnen stating he doesn’t have a contract with the UFC nor did he sign any bout agreement to fight Anderson Silva in the past nor this fight with Jon Jones and it’s a handshake agreement with Dana White, which has been laughed off by many as completely false. It’s definitely worth a listen as Sonnen comes across as having the utmost respect for Austin and the two are very good friends and it’s a fun chat between the two.

**The weigh-ins for the TUF 17 Finale on FUEL TV this past Saturday did a tremendous number for the station with 269,000 viewers and the second highest mark that the UFC has hit on FUEL TV.

**The UFC 159 weigh-ins took place yesterday from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and here are all of the weigh-in results for the card for tonight:

MAIN CARD (10pm EST on pay-per-view)
*Jon Jones (205) vs. Chael Sonnen (205) for the UFC light heavyweight title
*Alan Belcher (185) vs. Michael Bisping (186)
*Cheick Kongo (237) vs. Roy Nelson (258)
*Phil Davis (205) vs. Vinny Magalhaes (205.5)
*Jim Miller (155) vs. Pat Healy (155.5)

PRELIMINARY CARD (8pm EST on FX)
*Yancy Medeiros (155.5) vs. Rustam Khabilov (156)
*Ovince St-Preux (206) vs. Gian Villante (206)
*Sara McMann (134) vs. Sheila Gaff (133)
*Johnny Bedford (136) vs. Bryan Caraway (136)

FACEBOOK PRELIMS (6:35pm EST on Facebook.com/UFC)
*Leonard Garcia (145) vs. Cody McKenzie (145)
*James Head (170) vs. Nick Catone (173)*
*Kurt Holobaugh (145) vs. Steven Siler (145)

Attending the weigh-in lives it was definitely the main event that the fans were most excited for in terms of who got the biggest star reactions. Chael Sonnen cut a promo at the end channeling Scott Hall and stating tomorrow night it would be “one more for the win column, one more for the record books and one more for the bad guy”. Michael Bisping was being Michael Bisping as he got into Alan Belcher’s face during the staredown and Belcher gave him a light shove and Bisping smirked at him.

**The UFC has announced three more fights for the UFC on FOX 8 card set for July 27th in Seattle, Washington with the following added to the card:
*Demetrious Johnson vs. John Moraga for the UFC flyweight title – this was originally set for the TUF 17 Finale but Johnson injured himself and was put on the sidelines and will be the second time the flyweights have headlined a FOX card
*Miesha Tate vs. Liz Carmouche – I like this decision a lot considering all of the publicity Carmouche received ahead of the Ronda Rousey bout and Tate is great at generating interest and will likely receive a lot of attention from outside news sources because of it being the first female fight the UFC has put on FOX
*Matt Mitrione vs. Brendan Schaub – So Mitrione’s 16-day suspension comes to an end (he was also fined an undisclosed amount for his comments towards Fallon Fox on The MMA Hour). I expect this to be on the main card but wouldn’t say that’s a lock.

These fights join the previously announced welterweight bout between Rory MacDonald and Jake Ellenberger.

**The UFC has a three-week break between shows after running every Saturday in April. They will come back on May 18th with the UFC on FX 8 card from Brazil headlined by Luke Rockhold vs. Vitor Belfort and then are back the following weekend with UFC 160 on May 25th headlined by Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio Silva for the heavyweight title.

**A flyweight bout between Jeff Curran and Sergio Pettis has been announced for the next Resurrection Fighting Alliance card on June 8th and will air on AXS TV.

*Tim Welch
*Brett Nakamura
*AJ Matthews
*Chris Lozano
*Nick Barnes
*Andy Uhrich

*Rob Mills
*Artenas Young
*Frank Carrillo
*Eric Bradley

**UFC president Dana White attended the Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero fight on Saturday night and described it as “brutal”. If you can appreciate the defensive nature and counter punching of Mayweather, it was something to see considering the guy is now 36-years old, coming off a stint in prison and improved upon his performance against Miguel Cotto from a year ago. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon were both in attendance for the fight and took a photo with Mayweather after the fight.

**A welterweight bout between Matt Brown and Thiago Alves is set for the UFC on FS 1 card on August 17th in Boston, Massachusetts according to MMAFighting.com.

Chael Sonnen says he is going to buy the WWE when he retires, with the odds of that happening even longer than the ones for his fight with Jon Jones last weekend.

**Costa Philippou is off of the May 18th UFC on FX 8 card in Brazil where he was set to fight Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. Philippou suffered a cut in training and will not be cleared to fight and in to replace him is middleweight Chris Camozzi, who was already scheduled to fight Rafael Natal on the same card. Camozzi has won his last four fights with the most recent coming at UFC 158 where he earned a decision over Nick Ring. Natal will now be fighting Joao Zeferino on the same card.

**T.J. Waldburger is off of the June 15th UFC 161 card in Winnipeg for an undisclosed reason. The UFC reported the change with opponent Sean Pierson now set to fight to replacement Kenny Robertson on the Facebook preliminary card.

**Cheick Kongo appears to be done with the UFC following this loss to Roy Nelson at UFC 159. It was the final fight on Kongo’s current contract and he was offered a new four-fight deal, which Kongo and his management have turned down. Manager Anthony McGann spoke to Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com and stated Kongo will continue to fight.

**UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has been fined $50,000 for flying home to Brazil on Monday and blowing off a day of media obligations to promote the UFC 162 card where he defends his title against Chris Weidman. UFC president Dana White spoke about the fine to USA Today and that it is within Silva’s contract to fulfill such media obligations as they were putting a big push on tickets for the show going on sale tomorrow.

**FOX sent out a press release today promoting the launch of FS 1 for Saturday August 17th with a lineup of the first day of programming, which will include 7.5 hours of UFC programming including the live fight card that night in Boston. They will start with Ultimate Insider at 3:30pm EST followed by Unleashed at 4pm EST and then a one-hour version of UFC Tonight at 5pm EST (the show is rumored to be permanently moving to one-hour with the launch of the channel) and the prelims for the Boston card will begin at 6pm EST and main card at 8pm EST.

The release also promotes FOX UFC Wednesday Live beginning Wednesday August 28th with a live card set for that night as well as September 4th (which will be a lead in for the debut of TUF 18 with coaches Ronda Rousey and Cat Zingano at 10pm EST on the network). Also notable is that FS 1 will be running “Monday Night Fights” from 9-11pm EST featuring Golden Boy fighters and going head-t0-head with the second and third hours of Raw.

That month and into September is going to be another crazy month for the UFC as they have live cards scheduled for August 3rd (UFC 163 in Brazil), August 17th (FS 1 launch), August 28th (Wednesday Live card), August 31st (UFC 164 in Milwaukee) and September 4th (Wednesday live) and the debut of TUF 18 on the same night.

**The UFC has launched their own subscription channel on YouTube, which you can get a 14-day free trial of and will be offered for $5.99 a month. This is the same deal the WWE was offered but turned down because they wanted their digital content to be free and bring on advertisers based on impressions.
http://www.youtube.com/user/UFCselect

**Chael Sonnen has posted on Twitter that he is giving Wanderlei Silva 24-hours to accept his challenge and if he agrees he will donate 10% of his purse to a children’s school.

**Bellator will be running their next show on Wednesday June 19th at 7pm EST as a lead in for the new Bellator reality series “Fight Master” and could be a signal that Bellator will be moving permanently to Wednesday nights.

**Dave Meltzer reports at MMAFighting.com that the recent UFC 159 card headlined by Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen did in the range of 520-550,000 buys on pay-per-view with the UFC budgeting the show for 500,000 buys going in.

Image
**Shane Carwin has announced his retirement at the age of 38 following numerous injuries over the past couple of years. Carwin debuted for the UFC in May of 2008 and quickly shot up the heavyweight division with four straight first round knockouts that culminated with a win over Frank Mir at UFC 111 in March of 2010 to win the interim heavyweight title. The biggest fight of his career came in July of 2010 where he lost to Brock Lesnar in the main event of UFC 116 (one of the best shows in company history) and was extremely close to finishing Lesnar in the first round and then gassed in the second and was submitted. Since that fight he only fought one more time with a unanimous decision loss to future champion Junior dos Santos in June of 2011 (in an interesting note it was Paul Heyman, who produced Carwin’s segments for the UFC countdown show going into the Dos Santos fight). He was the coach of TUF 16 last year with Roy Nelson but Carwin had to pull out of their fight last December due to a knee injury. Over the last few years he also underwent back and neck surgery, which are tough operations to come back from in this sport.

**The UFC has cut featherweights Bart Palaszewski and Leonard Garcia. Palaszewski came over from the WEC and went 1-3 in the UFC including a knockout win over Tyson Griffin at UFC 137 in October 2011 and then suffered losses to Hatsu Hioki, Diego Nunes and most recently a rear-naked choke loss to Cole Miller at the TUF 17 Finale last month. Garcia was pretty much expected to be cut after his fifth straight loss coming at the UFC 159 card last month to Cody McKenzie. Garcia debuted for the UFC back in April of 2007 at UFC 69 where he had an awesome fight with Roger Huerta and would eventually be moved over to the WEC after the UFC purchased the company and fought there from 2008 – 2010 before coming back to the UFC when the WEC was folded.

**MMAJunkie.com reported more cuts today with Reuben Duran, Issei Tamura, Justin Lawrence, Sam Sicilia and Kurt Holobaugh all being released as well.

**Heavyweight Chris Barnett has been pulled from this Friday’s MFC 37 card in Edmonton, Alberta after a physician with the Edmonton Combative Sports Commission discovered the fighter to have three holes in his retina and would not clear him to fight. Barnett was scheduled to fight Smealinho Rama in the main event this Friday to create the first MFC heavyweight champion. MFC officials stated on Tuesday that Rama would be paid his show money and be booked very soon and that his next fight would be for the vacant title.

**Tim Sylvia is scheduled to fight Tony Johnson Jr. at ONE FC 9 on May 31st in Manila, Philippines at the MOA Arena.

**It was reported on UFC Tonight on Tuesday that the UFC has asked Roy Nelson to get licensed by the state of Nevada in the event that Mark Hunt cannot fight on May 25th at UFC 160. Hunt has been grounded in New Zealand and not allowed to leave stemming from a 2002 arrest popping up and making it problematic for the UFC and Hunt. Hunt is scheduled to fight Junior dos Santos on May 25th in the event’s co-feature.

**Bellator has announced that the kick off of their Summer Series on June 19th from Thackerville, Oklahoma will be a three-hour show that night at 7pm EST leading into the debut of Fight Master on Spike TV. Bellator has released the following televised fights for the show:
*Michael Chandler vs. Dave Jansen for the lightweight title
*Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal vs. Seth Petruzelli in the light heavyweight tournament
*Renato Babalu Sobral vs. Jacob Noe in the light heavyweight tournament
*Rich Hale vs. Vinicius Queiroz in the heavyweight tournament
*Ron Sparks vs. Vitaly Minakov in the heavyweight tournament
*Jon “War Machine” Koppenhaver vs. Blas Avena

**UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has landed the role of “Art” in the French language version of the upcoming Disney-Pixar movie Monster’s University. The English language version comes out in theatres on June 21st with Charlie Day voicing the same character for the English audience.

**It was also reported on UFC Tonight that Reza Medadi is off of the UFC on FOX 8 card on July 27th due to a visa issue. The UFC has announced that Jorge Masvidal will take his spot on the card against TUF 15 winner Michael Chiesa.

**It was revealed on Tuesday evening that Pat Healy had failed his UFC 159 post fight drug test with the lightweight testing positive for marijuana. Healy admitted to casual use of the drug prior to his fight with Jim Miller and has apologized for his actions. Where this really hits Healy is in the pocket book as his win over Miller is now turned into a no contest, thus forfeiting his win bonus but more important both of his bonuses for fight and submission of the night, which totalled $130,000 alone. UFC president Dana White stated on Wednesday that the submission of the night bonus will now go to Bryan Caraway, who submitted Johnny Bedford on the show last month. Healy also faces a 90-day suspension from the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board.

**It is official that the UFC will return to Toronto on September 21st at the Air Canada Centre with UFC 165.

I can't remember where I saw it, but wrestling is expected to be added back to the Olympics. I think they vote on it later this year.

**In a story that is getting a lot of coverage former UFC fighter and current World Series of Fighting featherweight Waylon Lowe is suing a sex shop in Philadelphia and the Kama Sutra Company, who are the makers of a sex gel he used that has led to permanent genital damage. Lowe has filed a $50,000 lawsuit against the companies citing burning and scarring that has led to disfigurement and dysfunction of his genital region after using the sex gel.

**This past Saturday’s UFC on FX 8 card averaged 1,300,000 viewers for the main card while the three-hour preliminary fights on FUEL TV averaged 156,000 viewers. The record on FX was set this past January for the Vitor Belfort vs. Michael Bisping card, which did 1,860,000 viewers. This was the final FX card from the UFC as they will now be airing on FS 1 beginning August 17th.

**A promoter in Quebec is actually planning to put together a 2 on 1 MMA handicap match with a heavyweight taking on two middleweights next month. There is a story on the controversy within Quebec about the fight at http://www.lapresse.ca/sports/sports-de ... overse.php.

**The UFC has added a heavyweight bout to the UFC 161 card on June 15th in Winnipeg, Manitoba between Roy Nelson and Stipe Miocic. The addition comes after the removal of the Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland main event due to Barao suffering a foot injury in training. Nelson has won his last two with his most recent win coming at UFC 159 over Cheick Kongo while Miocic is coming off the first loss of his career to Stefan Struve. The main event of UFC 161 will be a three-round bout between Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans.

**MMAJunkie reports that Alistair Overeem will meet Travis Browne on August 17th at the UFC on FS 1 card in Boston, Massachusetts. This is going to be a big free television card from the company to launch FS 1 and it is expected that Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva will headline this card but that is not official at this time.

**USA Today reported on Tuesday night that Josh Barnett has signed with the UFC after an eleven-year exodus from the company. Barnett holds a career record of 32-6 and is coming off of a victory over Nandor Guelmino on the final Strikeforce card in January. Talks had broken between Barnett and UFC earlier this year when the UFC would not acquiesce to one of Barnett’s terms but talks were renewed recently but is unknown, which side gave in on their demands. Barnett won the UFC heavyweight title in March of 2002 at UFC 36 from Randy Couture but was stripped of the title for failing his post fight drug test and left the company to fight in Pride and other various organizations including pro wrestling for New Japan Pro Wrestling and Antonio Inoki’s IGF organization.

**There is a cool article by Jake Rossen at ESPN (who also wrote the New York Times piece on Dave Meltzer last week) looking at the early designs of the octagon for the UFC at http://espn.go.com/mma/story/_/id/85159 ... e-fighting.

**Mark La Monica at Newsday speaks with Matt Serra, who says he is all but retired at this point. Serra also discusses a massive health scare he had recently involving a blood clot that caused his significant discomfort that he luckily had checked out and subsequently led to a surgery earlier this month to have a rib removed. Serra said fighting at Madison Square Garden was his big dream but realizes his career is pretty much done especially after this scare and has two successful gyms he is running with a third on the way and retires with a 17-7 record. Serra will always be remembered for the giant upset victory over Georges St-Pierre at UFC 69 in April 2007 to win the welterweight title and lead to a massive rematch the following year in the UFC’s debut in Montreal at UFC 83 where St-Pierre regained the title from Serra, which was such a great build featuring Serra playing the heel. His last fight was in September of 2010 where he lost to Chris Lytle by unanimous decision.

**EA Sports will be putting out their first UFC video game since acquiring the license from THQ with the announcement of UFC Championship being a title for the yet to be released X Box One, which will be out later this year.

**UFC president Dana White announced Saturday night after the UFC 160 pay-per-view that Forrest Griffin was retiring from the sport at the age of 33 with a record of 19-7. Griffin won the first season of Ultimate Fighter with one of the legendary fights in UFC history taking place on April 9th 2005 where Griffin defeated Stephan Bonnar but both ended up with UFC contracts as a result. Griffin would accomplish much more than many thought he would with his peak coming in July of 2008 when he defeated Quinton Jackson for the light heavyweight title in a controversial decision but would lose the title in his next fight to Rashad Evans at UFC 92 in December 2008. Griffin has had a number of injuries over the past year, which has taken him out of two fights but will leave the sport having won three of his last four fights including what will now be his retirement fight against Tito Ortiz last July at UFC 148 (which was also Ortiz’s retirement fight). White stated that both Griffin and Bonnar will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame at the Fax Expo in July during the UFC 162 weekend in Las Vegas and that Griffin will be working for the UFC in some capacity.
