I like these improvements too. I have mixed feelings about age limits. Both the NFL and NBA would need to create (in the NFL's case) or improve (The D-League) their minor league system to welcome all of the kids leaving early. The athlete should also be allowed to go to college with some sort of penalty if they don't get drafted or picked up in free agency.
Let's take a fictional example based on the past for how I'd ideally see the system working. Let's go back to 2003 when Ernie Sims was rated the #1 overall recruit by Rivals. Matt Millen falls in love with him and the Lions draft him right after high school. However, it's clear that he's in over his head and he gets cut after two years. Sims still has strong sentiment to his hometown Tallahassee and then plays for FSU. He has three freakish years with the Seminoles, and then builds his pro stock better so that he returns to the NFL and does better than he did before.
I think this is interesting. So if a HS senior gets drafted, stays in the NFL for like 2 years, it's now working out and he's cut, then goes to college to play, he should be able to. If this player shines in college, and gets re-drafted, good for him. If not, he has a 4 year degree to better his chance of landing a job. I don't see a problem with that.
Right. Early on, I think you'll have plenty of young whippersnappers trying to chase the money, with only a few true athletic freaks like Adrian Peterson able to play at that level at such a young age. But as more of them flame out, some might be more gunshy about jumping pro so early after looking back at history. If college sports were more lucrative as well (endorsements, stipends, not necessarily direct cuts of revenue from schools), it would be more attractive to take the college route first.

Well we didn't have to wait long for the first big upset. I'm not really a hoops fan but the first two days of the NCAA tourney are fun.
I guess this is as good of a thread as any to comment.

Why the hell is a game with 2 non-west-coast teams starting at 11:00PM EST?

Craziest opening weekend maybe ever, and no thread.

The talent is so weak in ncaa bball right now its tough to care (and watch). The greatest team of all time went 7-21 from the free throw line in their first game.

I won my frat tourney pool ($400) with Sparty's victory today.

PS - The NCAA will find a way to punish UNC for this Dean Smith dinner thing.

I like Nick Saban generally. He seems like he'd be a cool guy to talk to about football away from his personal involvement in football.

That said, his lecturing to the media on this Jonathan Taylor issue is pretty damned rich. Obviously coach you brought the guy in because he's huge, fast and has the potential to win you football games. He's OBVIOUSLY a bad guy. He's now dealing with 2 felony arrests for abuse and I believe a misdemeanor for trying to double dip on his checks from UGA.

Stop telling us its about second chances and education and anything other than winning football games. No you shouldn't have brought him on campus, no he never should have passed admissions.

Yes you're so fatherly, and all the "kids" are your children. You do so well shepherding young men.

Just be honest about it, the #1 thing for Alabama is winning football games, if winning football games gets a few more rich tuition paying students onto the campus and a few more caps sold at Alabama Walmarts... that's what you're about. It was NEVER and will NEVER be about second chances. The guy was a talented athlete that you had a chance to get because he screwed up somewhere else. That's what it was about, only instead of the usual weed, this was domestic violence and he did it again, before the season even started. Not sure he's cut out for college really.

When I first read about this, the article typed the quote as "f*** that n****". At first I couldn't understand why they were either one asterisk short or were censoring out "fuck that noise". Just another reason why the media shouldn't be in the censorship business.

It's shame that the refs' incompetence overshadowed the great game to me. Some pretty awful calls on both sides of the ball.
