you know what would funny? if they changed the medal ceremony to one platform with one participate and one flag going up to the sound of one national anthem. i mean, it's a lot easier than opportunistically cherry picking to prove virtually any point.

i think the top three in every event should then have to fight to the death, and the winners of those death matches fight the remaining participants...also to the death. last country standing rules the world.
fuck the olympics, and fuck the world cup. fuck the world series while we're at it.

According to The Guardian over 6500 migrant workers have died after it was announced that Qatar will host the 2022 World Cup. I've watched all the World Cups since I was a kid but I might pass this one. FIFA is so corrupted.
Did you post this on your iPhone made by Asian kids? Corruption is in every business and in every country. People died making the Golden Gate Bridge and the Eiffel Tower. I’ve marveled at both. I have to assume slaves died building the Pyramids. They’re still breathtaking human achievements. Not watching the World Cup changes nothing. I wish it was in the summer, but whatever. It’s still the greatest spectacle in all of organized sports.

Oh I know me watching or not watching the World Cup changes nothing. And there's no question about me being hypocrite, I think we all are to some extent. At this stage of my life I just don't see any sport event being worth 6 500 people dying and the rest of the workers being trapped in a slave-like conditions. But it's everybody's personal decision whether they want to watch this or not and whether they care about the human rights issues in Qatar. Clearly FIFA, the sponsors and the teams chose not to care.
And yes, these should be held in summer not in November. But they chose to have these in a country where it's too hot to play in the summer.
Good article. Like the author says, we’re all hypocrites to some extent. I dislike FIFA. I really dislike Qatar and their human rights violations. I could not watch. There’d be no impact and I’d miss out on a great month of bonding with my sons. I’m too selfish to give that up.
Messi, Ronaldo, and a handful of superstars could boycott, and I’d be among millions who would then not watch. But this is their last rodeo. I can’t find fault with them for wanting one more shot to write the fairytale ending.
It’s awful that husbands and sons and fathers gave their lives for this. That’s not unique to Qatar. We just get to see the fruits of their labor on tv in the form of lavish stadiums. It’s crazy that homosexuality is illegal there. It isn’t here in the U.S., but if you read the news when you woke up this morning you know it is still punishable by death here. The whole world is a fucked up place. Is there an acre of developed land in any “civilized” nation that isn’t haunted?
Tomorrow a few other teachers and I are taking our classes to a lecture hall to watch the game together to start off the Thanksgiving week. I’m looking forward to that shared experience.
