The latter term was further shortened to “soccer” (sometimes spelled “socker”), and the name quickly spread beyond the campus"

Yeah, I just watched the British film This Sporting Life from 1963. They called it soccer every time they mentioned it. "Football" was the word they used for rugby. I bet there are still a bunch of old guys in England who call it "soccer".
the last time i felt this much pride in my country, i was in a bar, and it was last call, and patrons were singing lee greenwoods 'god bless the usa' at full volume, and weeping into their skunky beer.
