hello RM sports fans,

I halfheartedly posted something in the sports-related questions thread but decided to take the following to its own thread. for the last several years (maybe 2013ish) i’d fallen into a black hole where sports--probably pop culture too--were non-existent. I’ve missed a lot, some to my choosing, some to life getting in the way. The purpose of this thread (i’m hoping) will be to talk about--and post things from--our favorite sports sites (blogs, youtube channels, podcasts, substacks, etc.), and possibly lead folks to places they’ve never visited, myself included. Sure, some of this can be done in individual league threads or team threads, but why not a one-stop-shop for sports news? New sites, new writers, and content creators pop up all the time, and some things can get lost on an individual board thread for a league/season/team.

below are things i'm currently into and following:

Websites:
Channel 6: https://channel-6.ghost.io/

this is really more of a blog. it's a subscription-based site with posts by Spencer Hall and Holly Anderson, mostly Spencer. you can subscribe for free, and get some posts, or get all for $10/mo or $100 for the year. their thing is they promise "two things" per week, and they've done well delivering so far. i think they started this back in July.

Spencer has written many incredible pieces over the years, and i’ve only come to learn of his existence in the past year via twitter. Two of my favorite things he’s written are about an insane soccer match and a game with no discernible winner. I’m pretty sure i’ve a man-crush on the dude. Holly is also a helluva writer and edits a lot of Spencer’s work. One of my favorite pieces from her--for the defunct Grantland--can be found here.

Defector: https://defector.com/. defector is also subscription-based, though i do think they let you browse quite a bit if you just subscribe with an email.
the athletic: https://theathletic.com/. also sub-based, but I've read some great pieces on there, so included it here.
the ringer: https://www.theringer.com/. I've fallen off the wagon on the ringer since some folks i liked jumped ship, but it's still got a place in the lexicon.

Podcasts: ESPN Daily (hosted by Pablo Torre), Shutdown Fullcast (another product of Spencer and Holly). i'm sure there are more, but these are the ones i listen to on the reg.

YouTube Channels:

Secret Base: https://youtube.com/c/SecretBaseSBN
I LOVE Secret Base. the videos are really well-produced and very witty. they recently had a seven-part series on the history of the Atlanta falcons, and it was fantastic.

Foolish Baseball: https://youtube.com/c/FoolishBaseball
I've only learned/gotten into FB in the last few weeks, watching this one about Rickey Henderson. I learned of FB thanks to Jon Bois, who writes a lot of the content for SB videos, and is very funny if you follow him on twitter.

Writers: Hall, Anderson, Mina Kimes (ESPN), Richard Johnson (sbnation, SEC Network), Tyler Parker (ringer). I'm sure there are more i enjoy, but have mistakenly left out.

Documentaries: i've been slowly getting through the latest 30 for 30 on the Mets, Once Upon a Time in Queens. bring forth your recs for sports docs.

those are some of my favorites at the moment. I'm sure there are others i've no clue about, and i'm missing out on some great stuff. like i said, I've been in a black hole. please help me control my FOMO with your favs. maybe you've got someone who posts region-specific content, and no one else in the country or the world knows about it. please share.

NOTE: this is for all sports too, not just those played or covered in the US. I want to know about what's going in your country. I want to read about or watch something about a sport i've never heard about, nor would have had it not been for someone sharing a piece about it.

okay RM, whatcha got? I wanna know who you're following.

i like this idea. good thread dad.

i confess, however, that most of my sports-related reading comes from the athletic, which is a subscription-based service. because i don't think many people here subscribe, i probably won't be able to contribute much (i'll be talking to myself (which isn't altogether uncommon unless i say something controversial about gigatron)).

thanks, Chris. and i get it what you're saying, but sometimes there are things that are fascinating to us, and we want to share them with others. i thought this could be the place.

there are things I've wanted to post from Channel 6, but...

1. there are things non-subscribers couldn't view even if i posted a link.
2. i'm not great at posting entire swaths of web content in this here forum.
3. i'd feel guilty for posting content that people charge money for.

i know there's great stuff out there...for all sports, worldwide. i love reading and/or learning about the people, places, and things that involve sports, profile stories, and so on.

I primarily use The Athletic. I follow a few writers and consume content on ;
NHL: the Bruins, Canucks, Golden Knights, Kraken and Blue Jackets
MLB: the mariners, Blue Jays
NFL: the Seahawks, Raiders
MSL: the Whitecaps
Writers: Fluto Shinzawa (Boston), Jesse Granger (Las Vegas), Thomas Drance (Vancouver), Rob Rossi (Pittsburgh), Michael-Shawn Dugar (Seattle)

No Dunks Podcast (formally The Starters on NBATV/Basketball Jones on podcast services) - NBA talk; a mix of goofiness, recaps, pontifications, and more from a group of guys who have been doing this a long time

There's more stuff I check out on the regular, but I usually try to listen to one of these episodes or more every week.

The Greatest Peaks series was really great. Very nerdy analytical breakdown of some of the best players ever if you're into that kinda thing.
