I find it pretty incredible how so many of PJ's best songs are grouped together on the second half of Binaural. But I'll give a reluctant vote to Rival. It's harrowing and heartbreaking in equal measures. It keeps the spirit of Binaural while adding some swagger to the final half. The contrast between the music and the message is all the more discordant.
surprised to see so much rival love here. i love it, but it's always seemed a bit incomplete to me, like it ends a minute too early. love that main riff, though. i felt so proud when i learned to play that on guitar.
I listened to both of these this morning and was surprised how tentative both of the studio versions sounded -- "Grievance" certainly more so, but even "Rival" felt a bit underconfident compared to some of the 2000 tour versions. I love the songs on Binaural and even like a lot of the production choices but it's one of the few albums where I almost overwhelmingly prefer every song live. The performances just feel so much tighter (on the 2000 shows, at least).
Anyway "Rival" is an easy vote for me here, as I expected it would be. "Grievance" is great but it's never been individually special to me, where "Rival" just hits that sweet spot every time. An immaculately arranged song with some real harmonically askew guitar parts. Stone was really firing on all cylinders during this era.
