Agreed

I think it's most folks' favorite of the prequels.

There's so much to love in AotC. But it's 100% the clear loser in the Star Wars middle chapter rankings.

It has its fans tho. I listen to a lot of Star Wars podcasts and the hosts have AOTC as their favourite of the prequels. Intelligent people. Like Alden at ahch to radio.

Everyone has blind spots I guess :p but you’re allowed like what you like. No biggie

The dialogue is so God damned painful.

the best dialogue is in the OT. After that, everything is hit or miss with lows like Attack or everything RAEYYY related

I'd say that true of all the prequels and A New Hope.

Lucas has an amazing mind but he's a shit writer.

Why is the dialogue in a new hope so charming though? Even at its goofiest it’s not bad. Just goofy.
Dialogue in AOTC is trying to be dark and then romantic at various points. And it just doesn’t do either well at all. It is just bad.

I think there several reasons. The first is the you grew up with A New Hope.

People I've talked to who first encounter the movie in their twenties or even thirties don't think it's much better or more charming.

The second is that ANH was totally original as far as Star Wars goes.

It also doesn't hurt that it came out in the 70's and had some really charming actors saying the words.

The terrible, cringey stuff in AotC is largely the teenage love stuff. And there's none of that in ANH.

Everything on ANH is better. The dialogue, the acting, the direction. Fuck, the set pieces. Lucas went for a totally different thing in the prequels and sometimes it didnt quite worked.

I've long heard people say that they think the acting in A New Hope is better. Everyone is better than Hayden. But otherwise, the acting is basically the same.

I guess all our leads in anh are more charming and relatable in various different ways. And likeable. Nobody in AOTC is any of those things.

Star Wars (1977) is a masterpiece.

The acting on ANH is very different than the prequels as Lucas was trying something way more rigid and dramatic. It’s pretty obvious and also it’s been documented.

It’s an entirely different story and all of it too. They’re incomparable in that regard.

Acting in a new hope wouldn’t work at all in the prequels and vice versa. Nor should it.

Yeah different tones, totally.

I actually liked the acting in the prequels more in my recent view.

Star Wars probably doesn't get enough credit for the caliber of actor they've been able to pull in since the beginning. Obviously the OT made some of those performers. But the PT managed to grab some unreal talent. I think one could argue that the PT has an even higher level of actor all around.

He sucks in those movies, yes. But he's really solid in other stuff. So I'm not willing to throw him out entirely.

But even if we say he sucks --- Portman, McGregor, Neeson, Sam Jackson, Morrison, Christopher fucking Lee. There's a ton of talent in the cast of those three movies.
