The end result of all this is that, according to the most recent reports, Solo: A Star Wars Story cost over $250 million.

To date, “Solo” has made $115.3 million internationally and $264.2 million worldwide.
Uh huh. That's a pretty sizeable bomb. Those numbers don't even come close to covering the cost of making or marketing the film. How much of the box-office take do you think the studio gets back, globally?
This film will eventually be profitable, just not within its theatrical run.

To be fair, SW makes most of its profit via merchandising anyway.

Yeah and there's an argument to be made that taking an L on the box office is worth it in the interest of advancing the property, "expanding the universe", adding to their character library, keeping the Star Wars name in the pop culture landscape, etc. But just looking at the box office by itself, it's very surprising. I don't think anyone expected this to do worse than Justice League.
The more I think about it, the more perplexing the decision not to release this in December -- especially after Lord & Miller's firing --- feels.

I thought I read somewhere that star wars toys aren't the big sellers they used to be.
