Well it’s kind of insulting to the Chinese market to make a film like TLJ and try market it as having Asians cast in it, when the Asians arent Chinese they’re both Vietnamese. This was some of the splashback.

Yet it’s massive in Japan. It seems Disney haven’t realised you can’t do one size fits all marketing for that part of the world. Wildly different cultures and identities. You can do that in Europe and even with Europe and America, our cultures are all the same. Not so over there.

Marketing aside, it could just be that the Star Wars story doesn't resonate with certain groups/cultures/peoples. Maybe there's no marketing that could ever change that. So be it. I'm sure at this point Disney isn't leaning on Chinese numbers for these films.
We'll probably never know how much Lucasfilm actually spent to get this movie made. They haven't done any sort of marketing push yet, so they appear to be cutting those costs. My guess is that's because they expect this movie to under perform. On those terms, I'm not sure it can flop.
But, I take your point. I also expect this film to do poorly.
