But I presume they really help, like a co-pilot.

So the description in the Complere vehicles book reads thusly

'The x wing starfighter was a top secret project of the incom corporation when the empire began to suspect rebel sympathies within the company and seized its assets. Key members of the design team escaped with the plans and two prototypes, destroying all other records of the ship. Hence into the hands of the rebellion came what would become its finest space fighter. Carrying heavy firepower hyperdrive and defensive shields the x wing is nonetheless maneuverable enough for close combat with the Empires lethally agile TIE fighters. Although a formidable space superiority fighter, the x wings complex systems and rare alloys have delayed full scale production of the craft for years.'

On the R2 unit-
'The on board R2 astromechdroid carries out all hyperspace calculations and handles in flight operations and adjustments and damage control'.

So it can technically fly without an R2 just with difficulty and no hyperspace ability.

Possibly blasphemous but George's rough draft summary for ROTJ would have been a fuckin awesome movie. Better by a long way than how it ended up.

The whole ramp up with Vader trying to turn luke and overthrow the emperor but the emperor looking to turn luke and replace Vader and both of them acting secretly so the other doesn't know, is vaguely there in the final film but it's way way more interesting and layered and a much more profound payoff in his early versions.

So sad that he didn't go that way with it. Or with Luke turning or pretending to turn only to reveal his ruse at the end. Much more nail biting and engaging story.

I've always been sorta let down by the way Luke kills the Rancor, somebody convince me it's cool.

Missed opportunity. Could have used that scene to show how powerful he’s become.
He needs a bone to stick in it’s jaw?

He throws a skull at the door switch to bring it down on the rancor?

He couldnt have just used the force?

I’m sorry. I can’t convince even myself that scene is cool. Though they worked almost up until the finish line to get it done. It was one of the most troublesome scenes in the entire film to get done. They tried it loads of different ways.

This will be a brilliant listen. They got Rinzler on to talk about ROTJ.

Return of the Jedi month rages on and this week Jason and Gabe are talking about the early ROTJ screenplay drafts with the none other than the author of The Making of Return of the Jedi and so much more, J.W. Rinzler! Together they all dive into red hot juicy subjects like : how did the drafts of Jedi evolve? What was Leia originally going to be doing during the film's opening? What kind of influence did the conerpt art have? Who was a mysterious Imperial character who got cut? How did the relationship between Vader and Palpatine change? What was added during the epic ROTJ story conferences?
PLUS : When did Alec Guinness almost quit Star Wars? What doesn't Lucas get enough credit for & just how many Star Wars movies were originally planned?
So put on that Vader helmet, declare yourself Emperor and celebrate the love with BLAST POINTS!

Force walkie talkie. So Vader can talk to Luke in his head using the force, but it only has limited range? It only works if he's close by? Isn't Vader meant to be all powerful Is the force not the thing that binds the galaxy together? Shouldn't he be able to contact him and further, find him at any point?

There's loads of others just some of the script pages and earlier drafts printed in the book made me notice them.

Luke left Bespin on the Millennium Falcon.

Yes, one of the very best scenes in all of Star Wars.

Re: Let's Actually Watch the Movie: Return of the Jedi

It’s a tantalising scene. In the earlier version of the script Vader has notions of turning luke to his side and the emperor is paranoid about this. The bones of this is faintly touched on but never developed at all in Empire and Jedi (he knows you can destroy him he has foreseen this) It could have been far more dramatic had we seen that rather than what we got, all of it reduced to Vader alone looking out over the forest. And the meaning of that then changed to us wondering at that point has luke broken through to him? It’s still a brilliant scene but the whole luke Vader emperor dynamic is poorly served when it could have been so much more.

Watching this right now. Well it's on in the background, has about 60% of my attention.

That's about right. Only about 60% of it is any good.
