While he skips over all the other problems with the movie, which are there regardless, I can’t agree that all the Skywalkers dying out is a satisfying end to the saga. That somehow all the Sith and Jedi dying brings balance to the universe. For me it’s a betrayal of the OT, and hurts the saga more than anything.

while I don't like the leia space walk bit, I wonder if one reason that is there is to remind the audience that the skywalker connection can be just as potent running through Leia as through Luke

thats exactly what it is...the certain point of view book has Yoda wanting to train Leia..shes more disciplined, more focused and the implication is shes more powerful.
the Leia space-walking scene was beautiful and poignant. It didn't feel out-of-place to me at all. I'm struggling to understand how someone could rationally take issue with it

I think that's why they are commissioning that new trilogy from Johnson. So if they come back to this story it would be years later and whatever happens next.

No. Johnson's new trilogy is probably taking place during the early times of the Jedi. Nothing to do with any of this

useless poe is necessary - he fails and fails again because he is learning what leadership requires (not heroism) at this moment in history. Johnson takes a hot shot pilot and blows up his ship after the opening scene so he has to struggle with being powerless. He fails and in the end learns from his failure (which yoda also teaches luke). its great stuff
To clarify, I just don't care for the character, or many of the new ones. It's not about his success/failures or anything like that. The new characters I like most are Rey and Finn.

I love both movies, but I wish there was a way to identify if you are complaining about both TFA being derivitive and TLJ deviating too much from star wars expectations.
This is an amazing film. Challenging in all the right ways, beautifully shot, fantastic character development that is surprising and logical, and faithful to the core themes of star wars
