That and his direction really lets it down.
The collesium on geonosis When all the Jedi arrive should have been epic. Instead he just keeps it at a wide shot the whole sequence and it’s a fail. Any other director would have gotten loads of close ups of Jedi actually fighting the bugs or even cover shots of them close up but they’re all just in the background so it loses all the weight a battle sequence should have.

I love what George tried to do to advance technology but it would have been better with less immersive green screen.

The droid factory scene in particular is just absurd.

I like the prequels, but I really wish I could change some things about them. While the droid factory scene is fairly minor in significance, it’s probably in my top three scenes I would have changed/deleted. So bad.

Do we know how long the 'feature length' documentary thing is?

So there’s loads of leaks from the TLJ novelisation out there and a lot of it seems to be pretty much exactly what people wanted in the film.
Spoiler: show
the first line of the prologue has luke on tatooine thinking about his wife. Health warning with that tbh but still. Rey is a force birth.
Especially this one on Snokes backstory

Crazy stuff in there! https://dorksideoftheforce.com/2018/02/25/last-jedi-novel-reveals-snokes-past/

More is good. I like more. Just gotta be selective about what you choose from this buffet of wonders from the galaxy far far away. I will never not be thankful for more Star Wars.
I lived through both dark ages. This is all gravy. More and more brilliant stories expanding the universe. Wonderful stuff

Excellent news.

David w. Collins who does the amazing breakdowns of the Star Wars scores on rebel force radio has started his own soundtrack podcast! This guy is really worth your time and the first one looks to be a doozy

Daisy just throwing a petrol bomb over her shoulder and walking off as Star Wars explodes behind her.
Further evidence of the 'do what you want' approach to the new films

Quote:

“Here’s what I think I know. J. J. wrote Episode VII, as well as drafts for VIII & IX. Then Rian Johnson arrived and wrote TLJ entirely. I believe there was some sort of general consensus on the main lines of the trilogy, but apart from that, every director writes and realizes his film in his own way.

"Rian Johnson and J. J. Abrams met to discuss all of this, although Episode VIII is still his very own work. I believe Rian didn’t keep anything from the first draft of Episode VIII.”

Pulled that JJ quote straight from his appearance on Colbert but doesn't cite the source. Ace reporting there.

Also, Daisy's quote is a translation. I'd love to see footage of what she actually says.

Also, I think it's a good thing that each director is allowed to do his own thing with these movies. If it's true, it helps pull back on some of the things people having been thinking/saying about Lucasfilm having too much control and not allowing directors to do their own work (much more the Marvel model).

Also, Daisy's pretty careful to say "I think" a lot. She could be wrong about all of it. If this is an accurate translation, it's pretty clear that she's trying to assemble all the things she's heard into something like a coherent timeline/narrative. There's a strong chance when she says "draft" she means "outline" or "treatment." I definitely remember multiple reports back before TFA dropped that said JJ was writing trilogy outlines and that he would even be overseeing all of the Star Wars films going forward as a creative producer. So...

Point of all this? I don't see how this is a bomb. And if any of it is accurate, and I hope it is, I like that Rian and JJ worked together through a lot of the process. I think that's really cool. Hopefully, the same is true of 9. But either way, we have two excellent new films in the main saga that I adore. I have extremely high hopes for a third.

I think it's true, and at the same time a big reason why the sequel trilogy took a wrong turn with TLJ. They didn't have someone to pull the reins when it got messy, and so Rian could just wander around doing whatever he felt like. A terrible approach to a franchise like this. Not that JJ is perfect, but hopefully he will be more sensible with IX.

fortunately RJ wrote a brilliant script so its all fine :)

and we know the overall vision is vetted by some group to give coherence and direction (hence changes to solo
and R1).

I don't think this is true at all, given the tumultuous production schedules of Solo and Rogue One.

It's the only explanation that makes sense to me. I don't see how they could decide on this as a collective.

Maybe they liked the direction of the film like many of us in this thread. ;)
