Oh man, that was really a stretch. I've never before seen a movie where people online have been so offended that others didn't like it. It's as if anyone not liking it, has to be both a chauvinist, anti-feminist, at least partially racist, unable to understand art or any sort of narrative, and is especially stupid if they liked the OT better.
"Star Wars was always about hope. Watching the original films with a modern lens, however, might give the impression that hope was almost exclusively depicted for white males. And I truly don’t believe that was intended, rather it was a result of the film industry at the time those films were made. But we’ve left that time behind."
This made me roll my eyes:
"And if TLJ or any of Disney’s other upcoming Star Wars films were slaves to the gender dynamics, thematic simplicity, (lack of) diversity, or characterizations of the original films, then the new movies would almost certainly be bad. All of the people who don’t disagree with the curmudgeonly fans would be losing out on something truly special, and the full extent of the promise in the Star Wars saga would never manifest."
But otherwise, I think the writer brings up some valid points, especially about Luke.

Rock music was always about hope. Looking at Pearl Jam and Nirvana with a modern lens, however, might give the impression that hope was almost exclusively depicted for white males. And I truly don’t believe that was intended, rather it was a result of the music industry at the time those records were made. But we’ve left that time behind.

It’s unfair on those who didn’t like this movie but they’ve been overshadowed and lumped in with the most vocal and consistently complaining haters who usually seem to turn out to be white males who are 1930s national socialist enthusiasts, let’s say. They hate women and different ethnicities ‘taking over’ Star Wars. It’s depressing. They’re out there in numbers.
He didn't say anything wrong. I think almost no matter who wrote the movies, you needed to bring in young actors, new roles, move the story forward. It would have been nice with scenes involving the original cast together, not 8 hours of them running around, but in glimpses, like they did in TFA, just with Luke there as well somehow. I think that is what Hamill (and millions of others) would have liked. Even with Han dead, I think JJ would have handled it better if he did VIII. It is what it is though. Will be interesting to see how they wrap it up in XI.

I really wish they would have left in that scene with Luke along in the hut posted earlier in this thread. Would have connected the OT characters a bit more.

I'll check that out. Someone very nice sent me the links the extras, so I'll watch all of those within a day or so.
