How about a Star Wars nights series where Chopper is a serial killer droid and swears constantly

Pretty sure he does anyway.

He said it depends totally on you knowing the universe and at least the near background of the story and it doesn't work at all as a standalone rather it's a total vehicle to what is to follow and fails to stand on its own merits apart from being an exposition heavy trudge to an amazing final sequence.

He's not really wrong on this point.

I agree with him personally, but my wife saw it (having only seen TFA prior to this) and she felt like she followed the movie and preferred it to TFA.

But as was said, well reviewed movies that can reliably make about a billion dollars plus who knows how much money in merchandising tie ins and everything else, will be fine :)

As a casual Star Wars fan, how many of these details were known before the movie?

Like, were the plans always on a planet called Scarif with a big battle?

Also, I missed the many Bothans dying, if that happened. Did that happen? I'll watch this again when it's out on Blu Ray.

interesting piece. i wonder if that was intentional (in terms of the force theory) though its a legit read even if it wasnt by design

I'd guess that the idea of the dark v light side of the force stuff was secondary (and thought of/pointed out later) to Edwards. I think the other symbolism (darkness crashing down, blocking out the light/hope juxtaposed to hope revealed) was all very intentional and purposeful and designed.

I'd have to go back and watch the other films with this focus in mind to see how much or little of this kind of thing exists in those movies. I suspect he's dead-on about Lucas. But I'd like to look at the three other SW films directed by others. Specifically, Empire. In my mind, it seems like there is a lot of my symbolic (and less practical) mise-en-scene in that film. I'm not 100% that Edwards is the first to really bring that to this film series, though I wouldn't be surprised if he is. Either way, I think a damn fine argument can be made that he's done it the best so far, even if he isn't the only.

Remember when The Force Awakens used the "we have hope as long as there's light from the sun" thing?
